EXCLUSIVE: 1966 Chevrolet Impala Convertible

Reader Rich H bought this Impala Convertible back in 1996 to take his family on fun trips to the drive-in and to get ice cream, but now that his sons are all grown up, it hasn’t been out of the garage for over 3 years. Rather than let it just sit in his garage collecting dust, he has decided it’s time to part ways with it. He hopes a fellow Barn Finds Reader can drive and enjoy it the way it should be. If you’d love to own this drop-top, you can find it in Pittston, Pennsylvania and you can contact Rich with questions or to make an offer via the form below!

From Rich – I purchased this Impala in 1996 from the original owner’s son (what I was told at that time, never researched to confirm though). Originally white with a blue interior, had body restored in 2006 to the current color combination. I have 4 sons who used to accompany my wife and I to the drive-in and ice cream shops, but they are all grown now, so the car has not been out of our garage in over 3 years. It’s time for someone else to enjoy it. I just replaced the power steering, radiator hoses, alternator, water pump, thermostat, and the rear shocks (also has air-bags inside rear springs). The car has not been driven more than 3,000 miles since 2006 and has been garage kept and covered since 1996. It has the Caprice wood grain dash appliques, but also have the original brushed aluminum that was removed. Is riding on BF Goodrich tires with plenty of tread on gloss black powder-coated 1972 Corvette Rally Rims (also have a 5th powder-coated rim for spare, but the spare in the trunk is on the original rim). The radio is a Custom Auto Sound AM/FM Cassette in the original uncut dash. The car comes with many of the replaced parts (dash trim, water pump, trim, steering wheel, radio, etc). I have a new gas tank in a box and new tank straps that I never installed. The original tank does not leak, but does have a large dent (from bottoming out before I got it) that pushes the sending unit up to make it seem like you always have at least a 1/2 tank of gas! Overall it is great cruiser as is, but would be a fantastic candidate for an LS swap!

If you’d like to see additional photos of this Impala, feel free to message Rich and he will be happy to send you photos of specific areas. It looks to be a really nice machine and could be fun to cruise town in! So if you’d love to give it a good home, take a closer look and don’t hesitate to make him an offer.

It is a 283 with Powerglide. Original drive train.

It is good looking. Looks like it has 283 emblems on the fenders and if it’s an automatic then yes I’d think if it’s oem that it’s a powerglide. It would be a good ice cream trip car or out to the drive-in.
Hope the seller does well, it’s a great looking car from what I can see.

Forget the LS swap!! Why ruin a perfectly good car?

I love the LS engines, and you could easily make the swap without damaging or cutting anything, save the original parts and it can be swapped back. Better performance (mileage, acceleration, etc) and you can take it to virtually any shop for service. But……. in this case, I am pretty certain I would leave it alone.

The article mentions that it has been painted a different color. It was originally white with a blue interior.

Great car, properly priced. If they are stone stock when I get them, they stay stone stock… Had a 67 2 dr. HT, from new, 283 power glide.. had SS badges but the car was a nice driver. Sold it to go back to college.

Beautiful car. I don’t usually care for silver vehicles but I REALLY don’t like white ones. Silver looks good on this one. Personally, I’d keep it, have fun taking the wife out on weekends and waiting for the grandchildren to come along. My wife and I have twin 3 year old grandsons. They absolutely love Sunday afternoon rides to the ice cream shop in our old cars/trucks. We get them all sugared up then give them back to mom and dad! Paybacks ya know?

Thanks Mike!! I agree about the white, unless it’s a pace car with orange stripes!! I’ll have to keep the advice on paybacks in mind for down the road a bit!!

Leave it alone. Well, maybe install the new gas tank.

It’s perfect to cruise around town and to shows/swap meets.
