EXCLUSIVE: 1974 Chevrolet C10

We don’t normally get too excited about restored vehicles, but Reader Seth S’s C10 is one sweet truck! It’s in amazing shape, but he’s ready to move on to the next project. He’s provided a ton of photos so that you can get a good idea of what the finished product looks like. So, if you’ve been on the hunt for a Square Body that is done and ready to be enjoyed, send Seth a message via the form below.

What Makes It Special? I always wanted a Chevy Square Body Stepside and spent 6 months finding the right one for restoration. After finding one in Arizona in April, it went in for a complete frame-off restoration, that includes a custom paint shade and two-tone color scheme. The paint is 6 coats of color, 4 coats of clear and it just shines. The interior is completely new and updated with a modern classic radio. The engine has been tuned up and has a Holley four-barrel and matching intake. This truck stops heads and is absolutely beautiful. I love this truck, but like all of my projects, once they are done need to move on to the next one.

Body Condition: Absolutely perfect. Any rust was cut and replaced during the restoration, the frame was POR coated, and new body mounts were installed. Heck, even the fender liner is new!

Mechanical Condition: Restored and runs well. The Chevy 350 V8 has been refreshed. The wiring harness is from a 1978 C10 with updated sending units and gauges.

Nice truck , but I think I’d rather have the brown 78 lot cheaper💵

Seller here, let me know any questions people have. Also I forgot to mention that I had the front light bezels rechromed. Do you have any idea how much it costs to get pot metal rechromed correctly? Uggg

There’s a reason people buy repops in chromed plastic…$26/pair…

Very nice squarebody and I like you’ve kept the 73/74 grille insert. Next owner would better like yellow! 😁 I observe you’ve chosen ’81up door panels

Yes, I do! It ain’t cheap to have the bezels and pot metal emblems done correctly. How do I know? I’m a GMC guy. Even if the GMC stuff was repoped in plastic, I’d still have my Sierra emblems restored before buying plastic replacements and those repop plastic headlight bezels just irritate me!

I wish the photos could represent the color better. It is a mild yellow, not a smack you in the face yellow. The truck was originally sunflower in 74 so we updated the pallet.

On the door cards, the doors are from a 84 hence the updated door cards.

You and the Missus have your DDs but want a third vehicle for weekend warrior errands and Saturday night around town. This is perfect. For the same money you’d rather drive one more nondescript 3 year old Silverado? GLWTS, Seth.

Very nice truck; it would be a most welcome addition to my collection. I would’ve just used a single stage paint job if I did this project. I tend to take my vehicles to places that would make some people gasp and I wouldn’t want to see someone have a major coronary when a seagull bombs it. And a seagull has more accuracy than a Norden bombsight.

Another part I would have avoided was to use a Holley carburetor (and the manifold that goes with it). Those SBCs are made to go with a Quadrajet and you can do some fantastic things with the stock setup, while carrying on with the boring, maintenance-free features that have made them so popular…

Thanks for the comments. I really wanted to go with the highest quality paint job possible and really have it pop. On my race cars I use single stage, and I just don’t love it.

Need a 78 like this, only in 4WD.
    Any out there?

Also: Does anybody still make west coast type mirrors for these old trucks?
Want to do a real 78 style resto on one of these.
    (maybe with a diesel)

LMC Truck has a “universal” west coast mirror, but, they look like something that J.C. Whitney would’ve sold 30 years ago. Your best bet is probably finding a C30 box truck and hoping that the painted mirrors haven’t rusted out.

Yesterday I caught “Jaws” for the umpteenth time but having noticed Chief Brody’s open top Blazer I was thinking of this posting. Same yellow / white combo so if you want to see what Chevy did back in the day, there ya go.

      Saw Jaw’s recently myself.
      Noticed the Sheriff’s Blazer too!
      Classic Chevy right there!

Looks like these are coming up in value. Mine was originally purchased by my dad. It is a 76 GMC, heavy half, so no cat. He ordered everything heavy duty. Guages, radiator, three speed on the tree (ugh) because he wanted floor space, High Sierra, step bed, chrome bumper, etc. I have the sales write up and the GM build sheets were in the glove box. Better copy them. Truck came from Fremont, and was ordered through Anderson Olds/GMC in Walnut Creek, CA. Great story
