EXCLUSIVE: 1987 Dodge D150 Pickup

Barn Finds reader has shared with us a very clean 1987 Dodge Ram 150 for sale. This truck is a southern survivor, with just 130,000 original miles, the reliable 318 V8, cold AC, and lots of recent maintenance. The seller purchased the truck from the family of the original owner and has used it as a weekend vehicle on his homestead, so the Dodge is used for light-duty only and mileage won’t increase that dramatically.

What Makes It Special? These Dodge Rams are super functional workhorses. They are cheap to own, but many were ridden hard and put away wet. This Ram has been cherished, as evidenced by details like the crack-free original dash that has been covered since new. The paint is believed to be original, along with pinstriping on the cab, fenders, and bed. It is a 4×2 model with an automatic transmission. The original books and production sticker are also still present.

Body Condition: There is virtually no rust on the truck, with only some splashes of surface rust at the lower edge of the bed on the driver’s side caused by a tire blow out that removed some paint and dented the bottom of the panel. You won’t even find surface contamination on the frame rails. The inside of the bed is likewise in excellent condition and based on what I can see, it didn’t do a ton of hauling. You can still see factory markings on the frame in the gallery pictures below.

Mechanical Condition: The 318 V8 is said to run well, and the automatic transmission shifts crisply. The seller has replaced the brakes, shocks, and starter, and also installed new speakers. The cabin shows no real issues either, other than some wear and tear to the fabric on the lower portion of the bench seat. The Ram stops and rides well, thanks to the recent maintenance, and doesn’t leak or smoke. It runs cool and starts with just a twist of the key.

This Dodge Ram is an honest survivor and has been spared from a life of heavy use on logging roads or contractor sites. The recent maintenance, clean body, gorgeous underside, and surprisingly mint interior make it a hobby vehicle you can use daily or on the weekends. The truck is located in Blue Ridge, GA, approximately 1.5 hours north of Atlanta.

Very nice…less rust than most 5 yr old Rams on the road today.

Agreed – lack of any sort of corrosion is one of the truck’s more impressive features.

Couldn’t make a case against it for the price ! I’m a reasonable guy and i’d be asking more if I were the seller based on what’s presented. The D body is classic American! Chevy and Ford were modernizing looks on their trucks while Chrysler just hung around, focusing on mini-vans and k-bodies. Classic, rugged look with venerable engines and drive trains. Worked at the dealer in the early 90’s. The new gen Dodge truck sold like crazy in ’93 and I loved them too. Looking back, I’ll take the old D body !

    Nice Truck !

Nice truck, not the usual GM or Ford…I remember this era Dodge being very popular as commercial and government vehicles, but lesser so as privately owned trucks. GM and Ford seemed to have a lock on that market. Must have been a price advantage for Dodge.

I bought a 1982 D150 in February down in Kansas and had brought up here to Illinois in June. Same as this truck, standard cab, short bed, but mine is the Prospector, and Royal package in blue with gold stripes. I Didn’t have time to got through everything in time for Power Tour, but I bring it out for local shows and everyone says the same thing, you don’t see these trucks anymore. No cancerous rust, just like this truck, light surface spots here and there, but what I’d expect for a 37 year old truck. Fun to drive, so simple.

My brother had the same truck only black with a red interior my senior year of high school, so 99-00. He kept it for a year or so. Had cheapo VIP chrome rims and 275/15 Radial T/A’s all around, and a decent stereo system. Hell he’s still using the Alpine 4 channel in his foxbody! Was his first truck, and he’s owned a dodge truck of some sort since. His was a better 10 footer than this one, but this is in better shape than his was 20 years ago rust/interior wise. He sold it for 3500 in 02, and got a 99 dakota 4×4 x-cab with the 318 5speed. The 87 318 was a slug, but that 99 ran 15.2 with just a catback and a locker. Very simple truck that is just flat out reliable. If it was a Chevy the price would double, and if it was a 305 I would say it was an inferior truck! My dad also had an 85 d-100 2wd shorty with the 318, and it was the only truck that towed our camper without overheating. His 76 and 81 squarebody Chevy’s both broke down towing.

I plan on leaving this mostly stock. Original am/fm radio still works, so does a/c. The previous owner put Cragar SS wheels on it, wider ones in the back, he gave me the factory vector style wheels too. The only big thing I want to do is remove the smog pump and all of its lines and whatnot. Overall it’s a fun little truck, I’m more of the cruiser type than racer.
