Reader Wayne M, we featured a story on his 1957 Dodge D-500, ran a wrecking yard but recently closed it. A few of the cars were too nice to crush, so he decided to hold onto them. He isn’t going to get to these seven classics, so he’s decided to list them here on Barn Finds with prices starting at $750!
All of the Mopars are convertibles. All ran when parked except the 1967 Dodge Polara. All have been sitting for 15-20 years. All will need restoration but thankfully, here in Colorado, rust is generally minimal. Prices will start at $750. All will need to be trailered.

1963 Chrysler 300 pace car. Full power with the 413 V8 engine.
1968 Chrysler Newport “sportsgrain” one of only 125 built with buckets, console and Magnum 500’s
1967 Dodge Polara red with white interior. Full power.
1965 Dodge Polara with the 383 and automatic transmission.
1964 Chrysler Imperial 413, full power and have redone, white leather seats that go with.
1973 Oldsmobile Toronado 455 and auto. This was my father’s car.

1968 Chrysler “sportsgrain” “one of only 125 built with buckets, console and Magnum 500’s?” Wonder where one can get that exact production number? I know there have been write-ups on the ones Mercury produced with the vinyl woodgrain sides. I’ve actually seen more of the Chryslers with wood and only one 66 Mercury with it. Nice hoard, but a lot of crispy soft parts and possible corrosion in places that don’t normally get it when the cars are constantly driven/maintained for years.
Lots of production figures are known privately. I used to call Chrysler in the 70’s and 80’s for how many made, plus how many made of a certain option. All this is known.

Also, back about 1979, books were published that covered vehicles still registered. I bought them all. Out dated very soon before the ink dried. Still fun to relate.
I discovered that after 10 years from any production, general purpose cars get destroyed by 50%. Specialty cars, loose less of a % in 10 years.

I subscribed for years…saved all the issues for reference and great photography. Any chance you remember the year or even the issue number? I’d love to buy the woody or the Polara. Transport to the East coast would be prohibitive given my current restoration budget. Read: nil
Well, this is better than most of these collections, some of the cars are sought after, however, people today seem to have the money to just buy a nice one, and the heck with restorations. With all the nightmare stories of restorations today, somehow I don’t blame them.
I knew Wayne years ago when I lived in Colorado. He spent his life saving cars from the crusher. He knows his stuff. Too bad there are not more people out there like him!
