Fabulous Riches? 1984 Cadillac Eldorado

eldo

I remember being struck by the silence the first time I rode in one of these later GM front-wheel-drive cars. It’s hard to believe now that these were downsized considerably from their predecessors when they were introduced in 1979. Quite popular in their day, this Eldorado is neither the Biarritz nor the Touring Coupe edition, but still cossetted it’s passengers in luxury. Unusual in having four-wheel independent suspension, the cars did exactly what they were supposed to do; cruise in comfort. Jim S alerted us to this particular car, which was a one-owner trade in and is currently located at a dealer in Ozone Park, New York. They have listed it for sale here on eBay, with a buy-it-now price of $3,950. Apart from some damage on the bumper blend pieces (easily cracked plastic that is being reproduced), the vehicle looks to be a well-loved survivor example. The near-baroque interior looks good other than a sagging headliner and apart from what looks like some rattle-can black touchup under the car, I don’t see anything in the pictures that worries me. Will this be the next great collector car? No. But if you’d like to relive some memories in plush comfort, and show up at a classic car show with the car that will be able to jump start the ones that aren’t running, you might give this a try. Here’s the link to the rear bumper blend pieces you need; only $85 for the whole set! I’m almost convincing myself to take the plunge!

not a bad price, this is an entry level caddy with the cloth interior, and sadly they still a had v-8, but no power.

I was a service writer at a Cadillac dealership in the 80’s and took far too many a cursing from unhappy owners of cars with the 4100 v8. No power and a hunger for rear camshaft lobes. (The engine, not the customers) The rest of the car is ok for what it is.

I had a ’79 Biarritz with the 350, it was the smoothest ride around. I put this poor car through hell and it just kept ticking. It was a car that made you & your passengers feel special. Solidly built & luxury up the ying/yang!

General question… why do people go to such lengths to hide the license plates on cars they are selling? I’ve never understood this practice. Particularly with a car like this, which is likely one of a handful in this shape/color/etc. registered in the entire country, let alone New York (there’s enough of the plate to see it’s an older NY plate). I just don’t understand what they are hiding it from? Any ideas out there? Are they hiding from L.E.? Think people will steal the plate? It just seems silly to me.

I’m interested in the answer to this as well. I’ve never understood it.

If someone feels it is that important, why not cover the plate with paper or just remove it.

With the internet, getting a plate number can get them an address. There’s been quite a few problems with bogus sellers/buyers, so caution is important when selling on Craigslist or even eBay.
Since this car is a trade-in at a car lot, covering the plate makes zero sense!

An address? How? You can’t access DMV files through the internet. Law enforcement, if crooked can. Even so, what does an address get them? Is there really a lot of theft in the $3000 30 year old car arena? I seriously don’t understand this.

It looks like “Ace” Rothstein’s car in the movie Casino though I think that was a 1981.
