Faux Patina! 1995 Jaguar XJS Convertible

The seller informs us that this 1995 Jaguar XJS was artificially aged for a movie role! Having been the owner of several XJSs I would argue they generally don’t need any help rusting, but the job at least looks like the paint was done very well! The car is listed for sale here on Barn Finds which will link you to a no-reserve auction that started at $1! The car is located in Bushnell, Florida.

Wow, this looks horrible! Even the license plate looks rusty! This is actually the 6-cylinder version of the XJS that was only produced towards the end of the long-lived model (1975-1996); some collectors actually prefer the inline-6 over the V-12. This one has covered 218,000 miles (!) and apparently is good for some more in the seller’s eyes.

Although this is a great closeup, it’s still a little hard to tell if there’s filler here or not, but I don’t think so.

Needless to say, the interior shows the wear and tear of 218,000 miles, but you could recover the seats and armrest and it wouldn’t be bad at all! And I can tell you that an XJS cockpit is a wonderful place to spend your time, especially the convertible model.

The seller has actually replaced quite a few parts within the last 100 miles to get the car running well, including:

  • New spark plugs
  • New coil packs
  • New EGR
  • New TPS
  • New Coolant Sensor
  • New IAT
  • New Battery
  • Like new Dayton wire wheels which have also been patinated.
  • 2 new downstream o2 sensors

They also explain that the convertible top was replaced by the previous owner about a year ago and works well. So the real question is — how would you deal with the looks — both the ones you’d get driving this car and looking at it!

I am guessing they didn’t know which sensor was causing the the check engine light, so they just replaced them all.

If this starred in a movie must have been Waterworld, as it is dressed for the part. Certainly not overblown like a Road Warrior rat rod.

Well, if you can buy this a reasonable price, then you have loads of ‘potential’.
    1. Drive it as it is – know the history, and be ready to explain – to everyone at a car show, cruise-in, etc.
    2. When, and if, you’re ready, make it what color you want. Satin black or matte white comes to mind. Something different than the factory hues offered.
    3. Rent it out to a divorce lawyer – ” The dream has died, and she gets half of that craptacular dream”. We often see pics of the happy couple in a classic convertible, why not pictures of then with this at the end – if they agree!

The seller of this car is well known to Jaguar XJS owners. He also made an XJS that has portholes for windows and tows a jet airplane fuselage as a trailer. He’s funny talented and insane.

I hate it when my plastic bumper covers start rusting — so annoying.

Is this guy selling that 1977 Nova a few cars below this one.

Both cars have that, ” Found in a lake with body in it ” look.

    Been missing for 20 years.

When I stopped laughing I realized that I love this. I’d drive it just the way it is

I’d bid $1.00 if I lived in the neighborhood and knew where a recycling center would pay me $270 with a title. Otherwise, the risk exceeds the value.

Is this a wrap? If so, what is the condition of the body under the wrap?

I found it a little weird also, that the plastic bumpers also rusted. I think this was a little overdone in the patina part, but I’d like to know what movie.
If I had a guarantee it would drive from Florida to Vegas, I just might gamble on a dollar

So, I found the boots and saddle, and something that looks like a guitar pick on the floor, but where is the tobacco?

eBay listing: “Car comes with cowboy boots, a horse saddle, and wintergreen chewing tobacco.”

Probably in the glove box, but if not it would give you reason to back out of the purchase.
