Flame Job: 1967 Volvo 122

volvoflames

I realized it’s been awhile since we explored Copart for some interesting finds, and as usual, it did not disappoint. This 1967 Volvo 122, found here, is a donation vehicle with some issues – the biohazard/chemical label for starters – but that could be something easily addressed with a good detailing. Since it’s not suffering from any accident damage, I’m guessing there’s nothing morbid about this old Swede. The flame paint job is definitely a bold choice if you fancy an old Volvo coupe like this, and it would certainly be a conversation starter at the next Cars & Coffee gathering. There’s no bidding action at the moment and the car appears relatively complete – would you take a chance on it?

It’s got the looks – now it just needs the power to back it up.

The website says this sale has ended and the sale is “On approval”. I guess there’s a bum for every bucket seat, even if it’s a ratty one.

When I owned a couple of 122s a few decades ago, this is the exact opposite of the image I had of it. The image I had of the 122 was “strong, heavy, old-fashioned, brick-like, and not cool-unless-you-were-into-these-cars”.

Painting flames would have been the last thing I would have thought of doing to a 122 like this, and I actually had a ’67 2-door exactly like this, paint color and all….without the flames of course. I guess flames can be fun, especially if you want to draw attention to yourself.

It’s funny – I always think of my cars as the coolest things around, forgetting most folks don’t really understand why you’d want to own anything more elderly than 3 years old.

Ever since I saw that painter on Overhaulin do ghost flames, all other flames look tacky or like cheap decals to me LOL.

If 122 coupes with flames tickle your fancy, this one has been on my local CL for almost two years. The flames went on less than a year ago.

The website indicate this is a parts car only, cannot be titled or put back on the street. Got to love legislation, like our (UK) scrappage scheme which saw thousands of usable cars removed from the road, none of them are allowed to be re-registered again.
