Former 427 V8 Car: 1966 Chevrolet Corvette

As the C2 Chevy Corvettes continued to evolve (1963-67), the buying public would raise sales numbers a little each year. In 1966, 27,720 Corvettes were sold for the first time, helped in part by a new big-block V8, the 427 rated minimally at 390 hp. From the limited information provided by the seller, this ‘Vette once had such a powerplant but a 327 lives under the hood now. Recently pulled from a lengthy storage situation, this maroon-colored coupe is in Buckeye, Arizona, and available here on craigslist for $55,000. Thanks for another find from a memorable period for Chevy’s sports car!

With its combination of original goodies, the seller’s Corvette may be in short supply among survivors. For example, the coupes accounted for 9,958 automobiles. But across all production, 3,799 units were painted Milano Maroon (like this one), 5,516 had the 390 hp L36 427, 4,562 were ordered with power windows, 3,670 had the telescopic steering wheel, and 3,617 came with the side-mounted exhaust system. So maybe just a few hundred were assembled with this variety of equipment or accessories.

This Corvette looks to be in good overall condition. And while an engine swap was made to a smaller engine at some point, the seller does not mention if this Chevy runs or not. So, you don’t know what is going to be required other than a bold asking price for what could be a project car. The body and paint seem to be okay and some custom work at least in terms of paint has been done to the hood.

We wish we knew how long this Corvette was in “long-term indoor storage” so we could ascertain what it will need besides consumables like a battery or tires. The odometer reading is 80,000 miles, but we assume that’s for the whole car and does not include the replacement motor. The interior appears to be sound although the black leather upholstery is showing its age in terms of minor cracking that could be helped with a leather treatment.

Car has some options. No mention of power brakes. Seems like all the money but a rustfree birdcage and frame well worth it.
