Four Speed Drop Top: 1966 Ford Fairlane GT

This 1966 Ford Fairlane GT convertible is equipped with the preferred four-speed manual transmission, paired to the 390 V8 and making for a cool top-down cruiser. Though looking somewhat sorry for itself here, the seller says it does run and drive, but it has no brakes and there’s a hole in the gas tank. Still, it deserves resurrection, and the seller notes he has more vehicles on the property – might be a good way to start a conversation. Find it here on eBay with no bids yet.

The seller has posted the Fairlane with a suggested opening bid of $5K and a reserve, so it’s going to take more than that number to get a deal done. The car is located in Manchester, Georgia, which apparently has extremely cheap body shop rates as the seller says he’s received a quote of $300 to replace the inner rocker panels. I just want to know the name of his body guy, since I couldn’t touch that price for that kind of work up here. It looks like the rear window is missing here.

The interior has been gutted, but photos seem to show a set of tattered buckets sitting on the wall in the storage area. the floors don’t look terrible and it seems like a blessing in disguise that the carpets have been removed as it likely helps ensure dampness can escape should the car be stored in humid or damp spaces; however, the seller does note floor panel replacement will still be on the menu for the next owner. The dash looks good, but the steering wheel is pretty rough.

The sides of the car appear to show a body that’s fairly straight from one end to the other, but the loosely fitting top stirs concerns about how long water may have been getting inside. The seller did observe rust bubbling in the bottoms of the fenders. Fortunately, aside from the convertible top rear window, the rest of the glass looks intact. The seller casually mentions he has lots of cars available, so it may be worth inspecting in person to see what else he’s got.

Pappy always said to use caution when buying cars with trees growing out of them.

Is that where the expression “three on the tree” came from?

That’s the way to treat a rare 4 speed Fairlane GT convertable. I’m not complaining as its always good to see an actual muscle Ford, besides the usual Mustangs.

I believe that’s a 67 based on the tail lights. Hopefully someone with the talent can bring it back from the dead but at what cost?

Taillights show it to be a ‘67

Sad to see in this condition. Kinda hard to tell how the floors are with Leaves and other crap inside. Plus sitting on dirt. if the inner rockers are like a mustang or a falcon, I’d pick it up and drop it at his body shop for 3 bills! Lets get a shoebox full of cash and some trailers and head to dixie motors!!!
    Cheers

My first boss in 1977 had a 67 Mercury Cyclone convertible w a 390 in it w automatic, I didn’t appreciate it at the time, it was during Disco, and my boss liked my 73 Luxury Lemans , so we would swap cars, gotta tell ya, left 30 footers outside my high school, wish I woulda bought it from him, he owned a body shop and always had something interesting, but back to our feature car those tail lights are from a 67

Pretty sure 67 taillights won’t fit on a 66, and the headlights look 67 also…. Not the first 67 I have seen on Barn Finds that has been listed 66

I had a 67 convertible 390 automatic. Before that a 66 2dr hardtop 289 three on the tree. I changed that to three in the floor. Nice rides.

This always “kills me” someone with a rare muscle car leaving it out in the elements to rot away but asking for top dollar with no reserve. Back in the day you could buy a clean one for half that price. If you bought this clam for 7k it would set you back another 15-20k to resurrect it.

Sorry guys, I think it’s a 66. Yes you can put 67 tail lights in a 66 (I’ve done it) & the headlight buckets are 66 along with the grille, you can’t mix 67 buckets & a 66 grille. But it does have the 67 arm rest base ( not the 66 chrome plastic “GT” base with light) with 66 handle not the “flip up” 67. Gauge bezel is 66 not the 67 with “gauge pods” around the clock & fuel gauge, also wheel is 66 not the 67 with cushion. So it’s a mix of both years hope this helps.
