Free Wheeling! 1977 Ford F-100 XLT

I’m a big fan of vehicles with graphics packages and this rust-free, original 1977 Ford F-100 Free Wheeling pickup brings me right back to the ’70s. This rare truck is listed here on eBay in Lewiston, New York. The current bid price is $10,100 and there is no reserve.

The photos are cut off for the most part which is always a bummer, not to mention that there are no engine photos. But, it is what it is, as they say. These trucks are pretty rare with the Free Wheeling package and I’m trying to think if I’ve seen one on a two-wheel-drive Ford. Apparently, the seller bought this truck on eBay from someone in Iowa in 2014 and it sounds like they took these photos for insurance purposes, not to sell the truck. They say that it has been in storage for the last five years.

I have seen the Free Wheeling package on black, silver, and yellow Ford pickups, both 2WD and 4WD, long box and stepside, and also on Broncos. Have any of you seen them in other colors? This package was available on the Courier and also on vans, too. Being an all-original truck, it would be a shame to mess with the paint and graphics but if the next owner decides that they want to repaint it, the decals are available from our friends at Phoenix Graphics.

With no engine photos we have to guess how it looks, If the interior is any indication – which it isn’t, of course – the engine could theoretically look super clean, too. This truck has a 302 V8 according to the seller and I can’t decipher the VIN, maybe one of you can? The seller says that this truck is clean, mint, and original. Have any of you seen a Ford Free Wheeling pickup?

Could this be a YouTube video of it. Description states published June 1 2014. The license plate is IOWA. Further, it states it’s a 302..

They were popular in their time but like the Steeler Special series they’ve all gone to rust. Props for keeping the original Philco Aeronutronic AM/FM stereo radio with the door mounted speakers.

You just told us that you’re not sure if you’ve seen one of these in a 2wd, and in the next sentence you tell us you have seen them in 2wd and 4wd. Did I miss something here?

I meant to say that I haven’t seen a 2WD in person but have seen both in brochures and 4WD examples in person, CN, sorry about that. I should have been more clear there. I just confused myself!

When I went to order mine in April 1977 they offered the Custom, Ranger, and Ranger XLT trim levels. Special orders were the Explorer, Steeler Special, and Free Wheeler. All were available on F-100, F-150, F-250. I ordered an Explorer F-150 4×4 with a 351 and granny gear 4 speed. I missed the Explorer order date cutoff but got everything except the tape stripes and badges. I also ordered the Northland Special and Super Cooling packages. It arrived the same weekend Star Wars premiered. $6250 out the door. Now they cost ten times as much!

These were great trucks, but over 10K for a 2 wheel drive is too pricey for me. Even if I did bid and win the first thing I would do is pitch the bug shield and running boards in the trash. My father inlaw was from Iowa and every pickup he owned had a bug shield and running boards.

My step son who is 36 is the same way. The first thing he does when he buys a pickup is pull off the running boards. His trucks sit so high I am barely get in without a step ladder. I really don’t get it. I guess it’s a generation thing. I’m a month short of being 72 so I’m in the geezer generation and I like running boards if no other reason than to make it easier to get in and out.
Now this is a nice truck as is.

@Johnmloghry I’m 66 and I’ve always owned 4×4’s so when I say rip off the running boards I should have stated I replace them with step bars. Running boards on a 2 wheel drive is just too farmer Jones to me. JMHO, don’t take offense please as I mean none.

I personally like opinions and trips down memory lane more than the factual comments. Facts have there place but you can fact your self right out of buying a good deal.
