Funny Car Build? 1984 VW Scirocco

s-l1600-16

With the fall approaching, there are a few months left in the snowbelt states where you can still drive your classic car in fair weather. Then, winter hits and its time to move those projects inside, or buy something new entirely. This cheap 1984 VW Scirocco here on eBay falls into the latter category, as the asking price is just $1,500 with the option to submit a best offer – but frame damage is likely going to force the seller to move it along for any price that is offered.

Looking a little worst for the wear thanks to some cosmetic issues, the ‘Rocco is an early example of VW’s well-loved hatchback. Unfortunately, it sports a pretty big boo-boo: the seller claims the frame cracked when shifting the tire into a different position! I don’t even know how that’s possible. That’s why I see a funny car future for this sad VW, with the Giugiaro-designed body atop a modern chassis and drivetrain!

The engine is said to have been replaced in 2008 along with a rebuilt transmission. Water pump, thermostat, struts and brakes are all new as well. The interior features the desirable Scirocco sport seats, though they look a little torn up. But who cares, really – you’re just going to part that stuff out and sell it so the inoffensive hatchback body can be installed on some rip-snorting chassis that wants to twist itself in half coming off the line!

It may seem a bit far-fetched, but I don’t think this Scirocco has much of a future as a driver. Having invested the money only to see it lost due to a big repair is a serious punch to the gut, but I still question how moving a tire around cracked the frame. I suspect the damage to the passenger-side front fender indicates a more serious accident occurred. So, what’s it going to be: a top-fuel funny car build or a parts car for a deserving Volkswagen?

He’s not saying that the frame cracked while shifting the tire. He’s saying tha the tire is shifted out of position DUE to the cracked frame.

Jeff couldn’t figure out how the frame could crack while shifting the tire, I was stuck on what shifting the tire meant.

24 hrs of lemons bound. Part out anything usable, straighten it out , weld it up, cage it, and run it until it blows.

This is a second generation Scirocco, which, I believe, was an in-house design. To bad about the frame damage. Did I miss the part about how that happened?

8v Scirocco’s are fairly common. Also they don’t hold their value unless it was a 1st Gen.

    On to the next one.

No Scirocco’s are common anymore, they weren’t even that common when they were new.

My first car was an 82, you can have a lot of fun in one of these. I put a GTI head on mine, it helped.
