Golden Opportunity: 1969 Ford Galaxie 500

This gold car is located in gold bar. Gold Bar, Washington, that is. This “very nice one owner” 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 can be found here on Craigslist with what seems like a very reasonable asking price of $3,400 – and cash talks. They may also be open to partial trades. Thanks to Miguel for submitting this golden opportunity!

Despite a missing wheel cover in the open photo and having what looks like a slight ding on the leading edge of the LF fender in this photo, this appears to be one nice car. This is the first year for the fourth-generation Galaxie and the seller has probably hit on why they just lowered the asking price: “The one draw back is it is a 4 door car, would be more money if it wasn’t.” Hagerty is at $7,700 for a #3 good condition 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 four-door sedan, more than double what the seller is asking for this example.

I have always wondered if the reason why most people don’t like vintage four-door cars today is that they are what most of us grew up riding in. We somehow want to break away from the family car image of being like our parents, and their parents, and their parents, etc., as if that’s even possible. Older four-door cars are seeing somewhat of a resurgence in collector markets, probably because everything else has been snapped up. I think this car looks great for the price, but I don’t have a thing against my cars having four doors.

There are no backseat photos and you already know that the front seat needs a new cover of some sort. Or not, just use it as it is now. The seller says that this Galaxie was “Always stored inside, no rust. Every light, switch, gauges all work the way they should. This is a unmolested true survivor car. I have paper work from the day it was purchased.” They say that it does need carpet but the door panels look great. No rust, though, that’s the clincher every time for me.

This 390 cubic-inch 265-hp V8 looks much better than I assumed that a 50-year old engine would look. A weekend of detailing and this thing would look like new. It has a “New fuel system from the gas tank to the carb. So new tank, sending unit, fuel pump and gas lines.” For a 4,200-pound car, a 0-60 time of 8.9-seconds isn’t horrible but it’s only about a second faster than a new Prius and its average MPG of 11.1 is just a smidge less than 52 mpg, but then you’d be driving a Prius and most of us would rather have this ’69 Galaxie, and/or a hole in the head. Am I right or am I right? I thought so. If you aren’t against four-door cars, you should check out this golden opportunity.

I’ve already got a hole in my head so maybe this fine four door would balance me out?

Found it!! A great car for me and my
family to drive and enjoy as is. The
only change would be to convert the
radio to an AM/FM unit with hidden
    stereo speakers. Other than that,
bone stock if you please. Used to
date a girl back home who drove one
of these. Lotsa room for doin’ the
wild thang!! And the vinyl seats
cleaned up easy if you did! Too
bad I can’t find the cash to buy it!

My first car was a powder blue ’69 Galaxie Custom four door sedan with a 428 PI, an ex-State police cruiser. I bought it for $200, gave it a little tune-up work and drove it for a few years trouble-free. Not the best car for hole-shots but on the highway, from 50mph and up it was almost unbeatable. I remember racing my brother in his ’70 GTO on the highway where he passed me at about 80 while giving me the finger. I punched it and sailed past him at somewhere north of 100 and watched him get smaller and smaller in the rear view. That was the last time he gave me the finger! My older brother found a ’70 ex-highway cruiser just about identical to mine with the same 428 PI. Mine was just a little bit faster but it was close. Loved that car and one I wish I still had it, but we all loved our first cars, didn’t we? Too bad this beauty is on the other coast, I’d love to have this one.

Hey Fordguy, some time I’d love to call someone’s bluff on “the wrong coast” and deliver a car for them! I could sure use a road trip. Just give me a ride to the airport upon delivery.

I appreciate the offer, David F, and I’d be happy to give you a lift to the airport! Gold Bar, WA is 2,934.5 miles from where I live. A 390 gets about 16 mpg highway with a REALLY good tune-up, that’s about 150 gallons at + or- $2.50 a gallon which comes to about $375 plus a few bucks more for hotdogs, soda, chips and smokes which will probably bring you up to about $982.13! A plane ticket home is maybe $300 or $400 so, let’s see……………… OK! Deal! Plus, I’m willing to buy the chips! Do I have to pay for the car, though? ‘Cause I’m kinda light there too but if you’re willing to help me out with that, that’d be great!

        Heh! Heh! That was fun!

Not to quibble, but I don’t believe they offered the Galaxie as a cop car after about 1965. IIRC, they offered the Custom model, outfitted to the particular jurisdiction’s specs.

The Custom and Custom 500 were full-size Fords as was the Galaxie, the Galaxie 500, the LTD, the XL, the Country Sedan and the Country Squire. The Custom was the base model of the full-size line.

Lovely looking car. I hope someone buys it and cares for it. Ford Galaxies are getting scarce, particularly the 4 door model.

Gator used a ’71 Ford Custom, the base model in the full-size Galaxie/XL/LTD range.

Four doors were for purpose, two doors for style, at least that’s how I always looked at it. Some older folks may have had a hard time climbing in the back, physical casualties of WW2 and/or the depression. Not to mention the hassle of climbing in out of the car even for the younger set..loading groceries, taking the kids to school, etc, etc. Got to admit, for myself, a two door just has a better look to it.

    10:53 AM….Detective Gannon and I returned to Parker Center…..

I would make an unmarked detective cruiser out of this.

I’m a sucker for these sedans. They give much more than they take. Never going to be worth much, but are a joy to cruise and work on. Someone is going to enjoy this one. So many went to the crusher.
