Grabber GTX: 1972 Plymouth Road Runner

This 1972 Plymouth Road Runner GTX is an interesting mix of qualities, as it’s had some restoration work done but other areas left alone. Under the hood, it’s not exactly stock but the upgrades are OEM in nature. Overall, it presents as a nice driver that could continue to be enjoyed as-is, or have the proper improvements made to bring it solidly above driver status. Either way, it’s a looker and has a nice mix of performance and features. Find the Road Runner here on eBay with bidding over $18K and the reserve unmet.

The Road Runner has been repainted in the past, but matching paint in the door jambs and under the hood would hopefully suggest this is its original color. I love the contrasting details that were popular at this point in time, with the flat black spoiler, Grabber air intake, and rally stripes. The GTX seems to retain all of its correct factory badges and emblems, as you’ll not the Road Runner decor at the bottom of the quarter panel front of the rear wheels. The seller notes the Road Runner did have a half-vinyl roof at one time, but they are now NLA.

The interior looks sharp with black bucket seats and carpeting, a full console, and an uncracked dash. The seller notes that there are some flaws in the paint, so it’s likely a five-footer car. Impressively, the quarters and floor pans were never done, so it would seem this Road Runner wasn’t subjected to poor storage or harsh climates. It’s also incredibly rare to find a car with those original panels at this point, which also makes a strong case for a factory-correct restoration. The seller notes it does need a new headliner.

Under the hood, the 440 has had the Six Pack option added, which suggests to me it didn’t leave the factory that way. Also worth noting is that the seller swapped out the factory rear end for 271 gears to make for more pleasant highway cruising, but that the original 355 is included. Fun fact: I checked out a listing for a grabber hood, and that part alone is commanding $3,000! I’d put that money towards the purchase of this Road Runner GTX, as it sounds like a well-loved car that the owner has restrained from over-restoring.

Agree, a 4-speed with the pistol-grip shifter would make this car even more AWESOME!! (y)

I think the “six pack” option went out in 71, but who cares, this would be a great driver. Plus, the 72 is much more rare than the 71, I’ll take it !

You would be correct about the 440-6 option ending in 1971. That said, with those long-legged gears you’ll never need four of the other 6 barrels even climbing the hill to the Eisenhower Tunnel. Add cruise control and you’ll get 18-22 mpg on the highway, which is where this Road Runner belongs. The bugs will come off.

Not so true .. there were 2 440 six pack equiped cars that the factory produced in 1972. A Roadrunner and a yellow Rallye Charger. The Roadrunner has been found and beautifully restored. The Charger was known at one time but there’s nothing on it’s location in recent years.

I guess if you are poor, you could sell off the hood and put one from a ’71 Satellite in its place, and cover > 10% of the purchase price!

Original colour was GA4, Gunmetal Metallic as seen on the fender tag. Tag doesn’t indicate a vinyl top though which is odd if the seller states that it had one.

    Regardless, badass car.

Very nice. Maybe nicest Mopar this week.

    Solid body. Like the upgrades.

Really like the automatic. Not a 4 speed guy.

Has not crested 20 grand. This car should easily be worth twice that. Looks like reserve will not be reached and only 1 day to go.

Also I would have left the 3.55 in for those red lite challenges.😁

From what I understand they offered the six pack in 72 very very few takers

My favorite body style. Just add A/C, and this would be my car.

Can’t have A/C with a sixpack…hits the air-cleaner. Switch it back to 4bbl will work.

Of all the Mopars, 71/ 72 GTX Road Runners, my favorite also, although the 70 is a nicer car too, better than the 68/69s a loaded out 70 GTX w buckets and a console, ain’t too bad either

I am all about the 1971 & 1972 body style for these cars. If this one were gray, I would actually like it better than orange, although plum crazy to me is ultimate!
Nice car, & if the price stays reasonable, it could be well bought.
