Have You Ever Seen One? 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60

If you’re looking for the reliability of a Toyota but the looks of a Rambo Lambo, then behold this 1985 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60. It is big, yellow, and burly, and it resides in Fairfax Station, Virginia. You can take it home for a $20,000 buy-it-now price or you have the ability to make an offer. A VIN is listed, the title is clean, and there are 140,500 miles registered on the odometer. You can view more on eBay.

Under the hood is a 4.2 liter inline 6 cylinder engine that is connected to a 4-speed manual transmission. All of it runs and drives according to the listing.  They also note that the 4×4 works properly as well. A new battery has recently been installed. There is a lot of character with this truck and the engine should hopefully have a lot left in it to give to you. Parts should be relatively simple to come by if needed.

Inside, the truck is immaculate. Some of the normal features, like the air conditioning, which blows cold, and the heater and rear heater all work great. It also has some wonderful other features such as a CD player, AM/FM radio, as well as a CB radio, all that again, work well. The seller also says that included in the purchase is the original window sticker and manuals. It might not be that important, but those are unique things a rare truck.

Thankfully the seller has provided some photos of the underside of the truck and they do show a mostly rust free undercarriage. There are some rust spots around the roofline though and on the tailgate. This truck has been used appropriately. It is now time for you to do that same thing. Not often does a truck like this come around and it is a decent price for the product you would receive, certainly something to consider.

Homemade pickup truck with rust in all the wrong places. Run away.

Not homemade but its a rust bucket and not worth 20 grand. Take off a zero.

It’s a conversion, they never came that way from the factory. Looks like this very one was sold in California a few years back, lost its roof rack. http://www.2040-cars.com/Toyota/FJ-Cruiser/fj60-landcruiser-1985-truck-bed-conv–136177/

      Oh my.
Do a small bit of cleaning, and more than double your money.

Looks like the roof rack had to be removed, as rust was taking over the mounting points? I agree with Redwagon, Run Away!

Does rarity correlate to value here? I’m also struggling to see the appeal here from a practicality standpoint…I love old Toyota’s, especially trucks, but I feel as though this FJ struggles with its own identity. Hopefully it’s just me.

I think in this case, “clean” is relative. There may be some patina on the body, and signs of use over the years. For most Land Cruiser enthusiasts, I fail to see why it should matter. As long as the truck is solid, and everything works like it should. The only thing I’d do is install a turbo diesel engine under the hood.

You didn’t look ad the ad and the pics of the roof. Not clean not solid.

I am not one that normally asks why or why not, due to it being someone else’s vehicle and not mine. However this would be a whole lot better looking and more practical if they just would’ve put a flatbed on!

I am a Toyota guy, 1 94 FZJ80, 1 97 LX450. Love them, wouldn’t touch this for a dollar over $1k. that roof rust is massive, pillars appear compromised. I do like the chop modification but would prefer it on an 80 base.

While it’s nice to see a Land Cruiser (that’s not a 40) featured on BF, this is one to avoid. There are so many fantastic condition 60/62 and 80s out there. Keep ’em coming, please.

For some strange reason, the word “immaculate” does not come to mind when viewing this very overpriced truck. I had an ‘85 FJ60, and it looked brand new compared to this one. Oil Slick is right on.

I’m with the majority on this one that roof rust just scares me!! You know water has been getting in there for quite a while and it could be a little hard to get to to remove it!! Can of worms may be an understatement!!!

Rare doesn’t always mean valuable. Just ask the guy who bought the 1985 Celebrity convertible (Hess & Eisenhardt conversion) for $4,500 as an “investment” lol. I thought that because there were only 100 made that year (200 total from 1984-1986) that it was a wise move lol. Oops! Ended up selling it for $1,200 to a friend. I did drive it for 4 summers & enjoyed it. Got my money back in entertainment.
Said friend sold it for $2,500 lol. Good for him! Better him than a stranger.
