High School Car: 1971 BMW 2002

Just how many BMW 2002s are still in the hands of the people who drove them in high school? It has to be in the single digits at this point, but the seller of this 1971 BMW 2002 claims he used to park this one in the school parking lot. The 2002 is a desirable round taillight model, and the seller claims there’s not much in the way of rust to contend with. The 2002 has been sitting for some time, and despite not being a rust bucket, the seller notes that the mice have been having a field day inside. The 2002 is listed here on craigslist for $10,000 in Western Slope, Colorado.

The revelation about mice damage is unfortunate, and the asking price is a bit strong without knowing clearly just how far the infestation went. Still, round taillight 2002s rarely sit on the marketplace for long, ,and most collectors would rather deal with wiring issues than bodywork. Rodent damage can take many forms, and while all of it is a pain, I hope the stench of mouse urine isn’t too strong. The rest of the 2002 does look quite tidy, with chrome bumpers in good shape, straight panels, and all factory badges still in place. That even looks like a factory spare wheel and tire sitting on the ground.

By the way, thanks to Barn Finds reader Gunter K. for the find. The interior of the 2002 looks reasonably clean despite the concerns about mice. It’s a shame the rodents got in there at all, because the condition of the seats makes you wonder if it went into the shed in largely complete condition. The dash looks good with the exception of having a few small cracks, and the 2002 is equipped with the preferred manual transmission. The carpets have been pulled up on the driver’s side, which makes you wonder if that’s where some of the mice damage was found – in fact, the seller does say it will need new carpets, so it seems likely you’ll find some missing sound deadening and the occasional scent of urine.

Still, the big story here is the lack of rust. 2002s of every stripe can suffer from rust in vulnerable areas like the shock towers, even ones from dry climates. No such problem in this car, as it looks just as rust-free inside as it does on the outside. The seller references a “…little bit of rust, no holes” and some dents, and specifically tells window shoppers looking for a parts car to look elsewhere – this isn’t a car you’re going to break down into pieces for a profit. While the asking price is high for the lack of information, one can hope that if the seller is sentimental, he’ll place a greater value on the 2002 going to a home that will revive it rather than getting top dollar. Probably wishful thinking, but one can hope!

Good deal if it’s not very rusty underneath.
Seat color should match the door panels.
Picture of the engine compartment would be nice.
Will probably be gone today if not already.

Mice like to chew on wiring too, that’s maybe the worst part.

Just noticed the front grills are 74 and later.

At one time you could only buy the later front panel and grilles, so it has had a bump and a later panel fitted, it is not that hard to rework it to take the early alloy grilles, looks VERY solid,
