High School Goat: 1965 Pontiac GTO

1965 Pontiac GTO

Some people were lucky enough to drive a really cool car in high school. You know, those popular kids that always seemed to have girls flocking to them. Well, that may not have always been the case, but there is no questioning if this was a cool car back when the owner drove it to school. They have owned this GTO since 1975. I’m guessing that this is a period photo, but it doesn’t look much different in the other shots provided of it today. The engine was swapped out for a small block somewhere along the line, but the original engine is included. It was supposedly stored on the upper floor of a barn for many years so it’s going to need some work. The rust free claim does make it worth a serious look though. Find it here on Hemmings where the seller is asking $12,500 or best offer. Thanks goes to Mitchell G. for the tip!

I drove a ’67 GTO to high school that was set up just like this sans the side pipes. Triple black and Cragars riding high in the rear… My dad hated that car as well as a few others I had. A 1969 Roadrunner, two 1957 Chevrolets, and a very radical 1970 GTO Judge come to mind. Ahhh… youth… A time to be crazy.

If I still had it, I doubt it would be for sale.

Stored on the upper floor of a barn? That’s a new one. How did they get it up there? Maybe they used the hay rake!

My Sisters farm has a barn with a banked dirt approach from grade to the second floor. They used to drive tractors up there to keep out of the weather. There was a basketball hoop up there also where we would shoot buckets when the hay was gone. I remember sledding and skiing down the slope many times. Fairly typical in Wis. Unfortunately no goat stashed up there!

Wow it’s my lucky day, first the wife’s 78 Cobra appears here now a 65 GTO exactly like my first musclecar I ever owned except mine was midnight blue and no side pipes. 389 4 speed car, Ansens all around Goodyears up front and Mickeys out back. Like JW454 my old man hated that car and all my others, if it wasn’t a Caddilac or Lincoln it wasn’t a car to him.

“Rust free, very solid body” sounds promising given the asking price. The seller would be well advised to mention any documentation (PHS) that proves it’s a GTO, not a rebadged LeMans or Tempest. You can’t always tell by the VIN data plate on a 65. If it was a just little closer, I’d be tempted to go see it.

I had a 66 tri-power 4 speed car years ago. Loved that car. Neighbors hated it and me after the first week or so. Wish I still had it along with several others. This would be a fun project.
