Homebrew Flat 6: 1975 Porsche 914/6 Conversion

Among the more collectible Porsches is the factory-built six-cylinder, the 914/6. Built in limited quantities with many of those cars going directly into competition use, the 914/6 is a desirable alternative to the quintessential 911. This example is not a factory-built model but rather a garage build that’s attracting a fair amount of attention here on eBay. While details are scarce about the engineering that went into the build, it’s a tempting buy even with some loose ends.

Just over 3,000 six-cylinder cars were built. While many of those went onto a life on the track, the ones that didn’t needed to find owners that found the 914 appealing enough to justify the lofty purchase price which put it within striking distance of the venerable 911. This example is far from the examples that you’ll find parked at Amelia Island, but that’s sort of the point: it’s tatty and powerful, no need for custom-built Fuchs when these Centerlines will put the power down just fine. It appears the rear fenders have been widened, as standard on the 914/6.

The seller is supposedly listing this conversion for a friend and doesn’t know much about it, other than it runs pretty well and the engine is from a 1977 911S. There’s no cover / grill for the mid-mounted powerplant, a standard feature on the four-cylinder 914, but this a fairly minor detail in the grand scheme of things. The body looks solid as well and the matching paint in the door jambs may indicate this is at least the original color if not the original finish. Mileage is indicated at 89,000 but no word if that’s the motor or the body.

Inside, the cockpit looks like standard 914 fare with bucket seats in seemingly decent condition. The six-cylinder converted project shares space with a MK2 VW Golf or GTI, so the seller is likely a VWAG enthusiast, which should help with getting the tougher questions answered. I’d want to know more about the built itself along with the history of the engine, if known. More than anything else, I’d love to see a video of this brawny 914 running! Bidding is just over $5K with four days left.

The seller lists the title as “Lemon & Manufacturer Buyback.” I’d want to know if that involved the departed four-cylinder or some fault with the rest of the car….

Don’t know much about the differences between a garden-variety 914 and the factory 14-6: did the latter use the same transmission/brakes/suspension? If not, did any of the changes get applied to this car?

What I DO know is that 914-6es are sweet little cars, and mucho fun to drive. This could be a good buy if there aren’t too many expensive details to sort out, not for someone looking for an investment, but for the plain old pleasure of driving.

Wonder if the missing steering wheel is included?

These are not easy to convert! Oil tank, electrics, suspension, etc. Go like the hell, though.

No fender flares on a 914/6.
