Honest Classic: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Malibu

The owner of this 1970 Chevelle Malibu is the sort of person that I like and have respect for. The car looks great in the photos, but it does have a few flaws. Not only does the owner tell us about these flaws, but he gives us some nice, clear photos, giving prospective buyers the chance to assess them for themselves. Combine that fact with the fact that these are a popular car, and you can see why bidding on the Malibu has been strong. Located in Canfield, Ohio, the Malibu is listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding is currently sitting at $18,100, and with the reserve having been met, the car is set to head to a new home.

For the owner of the Malibu, this is his second stint with this particular car, having sold it back in 2006. He has decided to repeat the process, so after buying it back from the last owner, he is parting with it again. The Astro Blue Malibu features a Dark Blue vinyl top, and this makes for an attractive combination. The top is in great condition. The paint is generally very good, although there are a few odd spots where the car has received minor touch-ups over the years. These include a spot on the passenger side door (which you can see in this photo), and around the trunk lock. The car doesn’t appear to have any rust issues, and the owner refers to the underside of the car as being in clean, driver condition.

The blue interior of the Malibu is in pretty nice shape as well. The owner points to some wear on the carpet as the major fault, but even that is more than acceptable in a car that is 49-years-old. The upholstery on the seats and door trims look to be in great condition, while the dash and pad are virtually flawless. The Malibu is fitted with a radio/cassette player with speakers in the rear parcel tray, and while these aren’t original, they fit with the style of the car quite nicely.

The Malibu is never going to burn the bitumen, but the combination of a 307ci V8 engine, automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes, promise an enjoyable driving experience. The owner states that the Malibu does run and drive really nicely with no smoke or leaks and that the car tracks straight and true. He actually says that the Malibu drives as well as it did when it was new, and I suspect that the dual exhaust would impart a rather nice note to the 307. At some point in the past, the engine bay has been coated, and this has done a nice job of keeping corrosion at bay. It looks a bit ratty in a couple of spots, but really not bad for a car of this age. He also mentions that the car has only covered just on 81,000 miles since new, but doesn’t mention whether he holds any evidence to verify this claim.

This 1970 Chevelle Malibu is a striking looking car, and it is finished in a very desirable color combination. I can fully understand why bidding has been strong on this car, and the owner’s candid assessment of the Malibu has no doubt contributed to giving prospective owners the confidence to submit their bids. He does float the idea of using this as the basis for an SS clone, but with plenty of those floating around the streets, I think that I’d be inclined to leave this one pretty much as is.

Sweet! I’d like to have it for sure. Put a healthy motor in it air conditioning and a slick paint job and drive it to some shows.

Really nice car!! Correct rims and clean interior!! Over 18 grand and reserve hasn’t been met with a 307 and an automatic!! It seems to me the prices are a little out there!!!

There are more ways to make a sharp looking Chevelle besides the SS clone route, this one here already looks really clean as it sits. 307 could be pulled and saved if a numbers matching 307 Malibu is really that special, valuble, and more power is up to the imagination, endless really if so desired.

As much as I hate the 307, I think I would have to leave this one alone and just drive and enjoy it.

Another future SS clone, ‘cause Lord knows we haven’t got enough of those already…

Buy an easily removable Yenko badge for the fenders and a Baldwin Motion tag for the trunk. Leave the hood shut. Add tall tales and enjoy as is.

Nice but a DOG of a motor. The 307’s didnt even have angle plug heads. Nice bod, I’d clone it to an SS after throwing a 503 in it, SS gauge cluster, buckets, 4sp w/ console, etc etc. Nah, fugget it.

It isn’t that cars are more expensive, it’s The Money isn’t worth as much.

I like the car but wouldn’t have added the wheel opening moldings (reserved for SS models in ’70 but installed on Malibus in ’71 and ’72). Still, a nice-looking car. I think I like the four headlights of the ’70 better than the ’71 and ’72.
