Immaculate 56k Mile: 1971 AMC Javelin SST

Here are Barn Finds we look at a big range of vehicles but rarely do we come across AMC muscle cars like this one. This 1971 AMC Javelin SST appears to be in excellent condition and is said to need nothing. The Javelin is located in Morrisville, Pennsylvania and is listed here on eBay with 4 days remaining in the auction. The car is being sold with a reserve and so far the bidding has reached $17,100. The Yellow Javelin SST has some modifications including some AMX add ons. According to the seller, the 56,000 miles on the odometer are original. That is just over 1,000 miles per year over the life of this beauty.

The black vinyl interior contrasts well with the mustard yellow exterior. The interior is not overly complicated with the gauges in front of the driver and the dash has a cockpit feel as it curves around the driver. The bucket seats and dash look nice. There appears to be a burn mark or tear in the console lid between the seats. The AMX gauge cluster has been restored and new carpet, sound deadener and floor mats have been the only changes to the interior with the possible exception of the restored radio. The seller states that he has over $35,000 invested in his ownership and, from the pictures in the ad, it appears that he owns more AMC vehicles.

The P Code 360 cubic inch engine is numbers matching and is backed by a Borg Warner automatic transmission. This motor was rated at 285 horsepower from the factory. A lot of mechanical work has been undertaken including rebuilding the braking system from top to bottom. The suspension has also received attention including new shocks, shock mounts, and strut rod bushings. The Javelin has receiving a new exhaust system, transmission lines, hood latch assembly and new weatherstripping. Even though it is a low mile car, some things don’t hold up over time as gaskets dry out and begin to leak. The power steering pump, water pump, carburetor, and fuel pump have received attention. The distributor has been upgraded with a Pertronix kit.

The sale of the car includes some paperwork including the window sticker. I like the factory machine wheels and the overall stance of the Javelin. The seller discloses that the floor pans are solid but the inner rocker panels have been replaced and their is a small wheel opening patch. Otherwise, the body is straight and the correct color. The front fenders and hood look like they are a brighter yellow than the doors and back of the car but that could just be the lighting.

I’ve always felt that the Javelin was the most “muscular” looking of the muscle cars! This one is really good looking and if I were in the market for one, I’d be ALL OVER this one! Nothing to do but get into and ride! GLWTA!! :-)

Really like the pictures of the ‘in progress’ phase…as well as the pictures of his ‘shed’, the older Javelin in first shot, the Camaro in
Shot 10 and 11, the blue ’73 or ’74 in shot 16 (notice the black bumper guards are missing – really gives that AMX a cleaner look).
This seller doesn’t do anything half way – as the pictures show. Love those passionate owners and sellers, as opposed to Mr. ’74 Laguna…

Very nice! However, once again there is no such thing as a “numbers matching” AMC car.

I was 18 and ordered one of these in 1971 . Mine had the 360 with a 4 speed trans . I had so much fun with this car . I used to have girls beg me for a ride in it . It was such a good looking car ! I was also told it looked like a bullet . Mine was the same color that they called butterscotch gold . Sure do wish I still had it ……

With a little machining and some good aftermarket parts that motor will make 450 naturally aspirated horsepower. Nice…

I liked these even before I became a car guy. I think the Javelin and AMX have been under priced in the car hobby. A 1970 AMX with the go package and factory side exhaust is still a dream car to me.
I like this one and sure can appreciate all the work put into it.

I had to read the ad twice and looked at the pics. The car appears to be an original Javelin AMX. Hold up. It started life as just an SST. Sad that it wasn’t restored as a true mile 56,000 SST. What it is now is simply a Javelin AMX clone. A 71 SST with 360 and factory Machine wheels is rare in itself. Unbelievable to me why the seller went so far as to make it something it is not.

I personally wouldn’t mind the fiberglass cowl induction hood on an SST. It is both rare and looks right at home on the 71-74 Javelin as do front and rear spoilers. He went so far and changed the dash overlay and door inserts to reflect AMX and added the park lights in the grille and grill screen. It isn’t an AMX. AMC guys will look at the trim tag. This is a 797 car.

If I were to pay for a blue chip AMC and pay the money the seller is hoping for (Sorry $17K isn’t going to get it) I would wait around for the genuine article. I would also hold out for the Z code 401 and 3 pedals. Or an even rare SST with 401 and 4 speed. They are out there.

GM guys are OK with their over restored Camaro/Chevelles with their fake SS emblems. True American Motors people are not.,,,,,,,at least this one.

It’s funny the seller offers in his Q/A to remove parts like the original Machine wheels and other stuff to get to the price you can afford. Lets see. Incorrect hood. $1500. AMX grille and screen $1500 Machine Wheels $3000. Ram air assembly $1000……..Nice looking car but I will only pay SST money here.

And you will be waiting a LOOOOOONG time. I have had 5 71 Javelin/AMX since 1979 and they are far and few between and not many made. BTW the console looks incorrect as are the turnsignal grill lights, should be clear on a 71.

I was notified by a subscriber the my car was on barnfinds. Thanks for the comments. I bought the car out of chicago from the second owner who had bought the car years back from the original owner. once he collected parts including ram air hood and spoiler that he wanted on the car hesent out for get the car restored and painted, which ended up to be a long process like any body shop when its a fill in work.As for the pics they had the body parts off to paint the car and get good coverage, the one pic shows perfect fender troughs and there was a patch behind RR quarter that was tig welded in,It was painted, sticker and trim was put on , got running and sat some more once back to his garage….. I had bought the SST 3 years ago and when i got the car it was nice but needed finishing and first thing sent to a shop here to get inner rockers done which had some spots- the shop did a ok job on the install, could have been better but it was hard enough to find a shop. After i got the car back,I replaced all fuel lines, brake lines, brakes, calipers,e brake spring plates and the list goes on and on.Interior was nice and still had the SST inserts and cluster but i like the turned aluminum so i bought a restored cluster and AMX door panel inserts, added sound deadener, new carpet and mats. the engine bay way pretty shabby, resprayed the engine compartment to look original and replace mostely everything on the motor9water pump, starter, oild housing adaptor, fan shroud ,pertronix, exhaust, restore PS pump, correct air cleaner, etc, etc). Got to the front i it had a NOS Jav grill installed but i liked the AMX grill so found one and installed that with a glass lower spoiler painted to match..Machine wheels have 5 miles on them… Seems like you start out thinking your only going to do a little bit and end up doing alot of new parts to make things the was you like it and end up witharound 35k invested… Just as i was finishing the car up i found my maxi blue 73 AMX 360 car with a upgraded 401/ 727 trans. So i had the dilemma of which one to keep. So i am keeping the 401 car to give myself a little bit of room in a over crowded garage. I will probably regret selling the mustard yellow jav but was a great process bringing her to this condition. it will be a great car for someone to enjoy..

If this Javey doesn’t reach $30,000, I’ll eat my AMC cap!

Concerning how easy it is to find a true AMX, its not. Most AMC’ers would rather give up their firstborn kid then sell their car. I tried to buy minty looking cars at AMC Car shows for years. Im talking 73 Pierre Cardin AMX’s that I offered 35k for and was promptly turned down, and cars of that caliber. I finely found my 401 SST, after it showed up on Facebook, being sold by a 67 year old gentleman who had a similar one new. It was barley advertised, and didn’t contain the word “4 speed” in the ad..

No sale. I’m trying to justify why you didn’t accept the $20, 200 bid. eBay says reserve not met. How much do you want for this Javelin?
