It’s A Bit Small: 1970 MG Midget

The seller of this very sweet looking and seemingly original 1970 MG Midget, for sale here on craigslist in Stratford, Connecticut says he is only selling the car because he has a baby due in a month from now. It is a small car, after all.

I do not know British sports cars as well as my colleagues on Barn Finds or even many of our readers. So I can’t really tell if this car is as original as it appears to be.

The seller says this car has been in storage most of its life. At 45 years old, if that is original paint, it is pretty amazing, so I am guessing this car has had a repaint at some point in its long life. This is a northeast car, so if it was driven during our Connecticut winters, it surely must be examined for hidden rust too.

The seller also says the car has low mileage, but does not state the exact miles on the car. It is said to have a new transmission, new brakes and new tires.

And the interior does look very clean.

The asking price seems pretty high at $10,995, but maybe those of you who know these cars well can weigh in on this car’s value. Is it worth this much? This MG does look great in red.

Oh, I forgot to mention, this car is located in the town where I live, I can tell from the photos that it’s about four blocks from my house, so I am very tempted to go take a look and a test drive.

The price is only 300% of the car’s value. Having said that, Spridgets are solid drivers, able competitors and infinitely customisable. I had a client who dropped a Rover V8 in one. Nice looking, chrome grill car. Floor pans and inner fenders up front are the rot points but parts are plentiful and cheap. This car would be a good buy at $3000 and a bit pricey at $4000. The seller obviously is not serious but has it on the market to please his preggers better half.

IF the car is an excellent, low miles example, the price falls well within both the CPI and Kelley Blue Book guides. Poor pictures, and too few of them, doesn’t help this seller’s cause.

It’s been painted. The black on the rocker panels shouldn’t extend above the chrome. Agree that this is a $4,000 car at best.

Interesting in one photo it’s wearing Conn. plates and in another NY plates. Wonder how much time elapsed between the two? FYI….I have a ’70 midget..price is ok for negotiation purposes. He’d should take $8.5 – 9K.

You can ask what you want. Try selling one for $4K.

At 6’5″, a B is as small as I can go. Love these though!

That’s bad news, C.W., I’m also 6′-5″ tall and have always wanted an MG Midget / A-H Sprite. Bummer.

Scotty, I have a 6’3″ friend that drove a Midget for a long time. NEVER put the top up. :-)

That would work for me, Jamie. I’ll just wrap my forehead in cling-wrap to keep the bugs off..

I painstakingly restored a 68 years ago. Would like to see engine compartment. Not sure of those seats. Certainly not correct for a 68 but they might have changed by 70? No rust apparent in the suspect places like the bottom rear of the front fenders.

Unless somebody washed an MG B with scalding hot water and it shrunk, this isn’t a $10K car. But if it is as good as it looks and power train, suspension and steering are solid, this could be a $6K car.

He should ask her if he could keep the car if they put the baby up for adoption……

Seats are from a later model rubber car.

    Yes,those are stock seats.
I have an early ’74 cb (chrome bumper) Midget,
& am looking forward to getting it on the road.
These are creeping up in price, but I don’t
think that it’ll sell at that price.

    but couldn’t.”

I had virtually (white) this exact car in 78. It was great fun and very easy to work on. Which was a good thing, because I was constantly needing to work on it! After several years I sold it. I’m 6’2 and fit fine, but looked a bit goofy in it.
