Ivy League Ford Sighting

Ivy League Ford

From Matthew K. – I was driving through Cle Elum Washington a few months ago and couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw this Shoebox Ford growing out of the side of a building!

I don’t think that’s a “shoebox,” which I believe is the vernacular for a coupe. This is the twin of the first family car that I remember, from when I was 8 years old: a 1950 Ford “Tudor” sedan. Ours had a V8 with overdrive. (The 4-door version was called a “Fordor.”)

“shoebox” is commonly the nickname for all 49-51 Ford cars of any body style…..

Chris nailed it. .shoebox refers to the 50ish fords and the Chevy’s from a few years later. I’ve always thought these are good looking cars. The simpler the better in my opinion

WNC? As in western NC? We’ve been in Swain county for the last 5 years…although in Dec we took off in the motorhome and are in the PNW currently!

YEP! 1950 Ford Tudor Deluxe. The sunvisor was an “after market” item. As was the dash mounted prism that allowed the driver to see traffic lights while sitting up straight. Dad bought a 1949 Fordor off the showroom floor. It later became my brother’s car and I bought it from him in 1960 – my 1st car.

I have been a 49 – 51 Monarch man since I got my first one in 1962, but always loved the shoes. Our high school parking lot was gravel and a buddy had a nice 1950 Meteor. One day we parked opposite each other backed out back to back until our rear bumpers touched, then tried to push each other into his spot. In reverse, gravel was flying up under our own cars. Dumb, huh? Nobody won, we just spun our tires.
In case anyone does not know, Canada had both Mercury and Monarch cars and Ford and Meteor cars. Only difference was the trim and grills.

Slab sided Ford and Chevies were shoeboxes and round cars were upside-down bathtubs. I drive a New-Edge Mustang. lots of nick names out there.
