Last Minute Gift: 1930s Clipper Coaster Wagon

With Christmas right around the corner, many of us are doing last minute shopping. My wife and I just purchased a little red wagon for our son. We figured that since Radio Flyers littered the neighborhoods we grew up in, that our boy would love one too. As luck would have it, while searching for cars for Wagon Wednesday, I stumbled across this unlikely barn find. It is a Clipper Coaster wagon from the thirties. It may just be good for a laugh, but it might even make a great last minute gift for someone’s little guy.

Wagons used to be built for more than just hauling items around. No toy company would promote the idea now, but these old coaster wagons were actually designed so the owner could crawl up inside and fly down inclines. The handle was kinked back to make it easier to steer the front wheels. This Clipper was built for racing with ball bearing wheels to help it go faster down hills. If things got a little too intense the rider could always reach back and pull the hand brake. Looks like lots of fun to us!

This little wagon has seen better days, but the seller claims that it is all there except for one hubcap. The tires are good and you can even make out the original decals. There is some surface rust, so you will want to have it resprayed or at least get a tetanus shot. We can’t give our opinion on the asking price, but $225 doesn’t sound too outrageous. If you think this could be the perfect gift for your future barn finder, take a look at the craigslist ad here.

I don’t think the asking price is out of the ballpark at all. It takes a lot of time to restore even a little red wagon. I just finished building a set of vinyl decals for a guy who is restoring a vintage Radio Flyer and he’s got a Clipper that he wants me to build transfers for as well. We might silk screen this one. The time required for the transfers alone adds up to more than some might think.
