Little Chugger: 1982 Mazda B2200 Diesel

When 75 hp is just too much for you, check out this 58 hp 1982 Mazda B2200 Diesel. This little oil-burner is in Damascus, Maryland, just northeast of the nation’s capital. It looks like a pretty nice one – check it out here on Craigslist, and then again when that link goes away, check it out here. The seller is asking $4,000 for this little chugger.

It’s unfortunate that the formerly-giant side mirrors were taken off, leaving holes to soak up that sweet northeast rain, snow, and salt. But, maybe they were plugged instead of just left open, it’s hard to tell from the oddly-greasy photos. They almost look like 1940s glamour photos and this little truck really does look great from the photos, slightly-blurry or not.

“Hey, that thing got a diesel?”, to paraphrase one of the best vehicle-related commercials of all time. A pair of pretty handy LED driving lights have been added and someone has added a couple of badges that wouldn’t have been there from factory. The bed has been painted with something and I’m sure that it helps to keep the scratches down a bit, or at least makes it easier to touch them up. That is, if a person were going to touch up scratches in the bed of a little working truck like this one. The seller mentions that it could use u-joints in the future, those are fairly easy to change and super cheap and easy to buy.

The interior also appears to be nice for a working-quality truck. It’s not fancy and it was never meant to be. The driver’s side door panel need a little help and you can see the floor on the driver’s side from that photo looks a little suspect. Seat covers usually mean torn and/or otherwise trashed original seats, but not always. I recently got a car that had seat covers and I expected the worst but the original seats were perfect under those covers. The seller of this truck says that it could use new carpet and the radio doesn’t seem to work, those are easy fixes for the next owner.

Here’s the Perkins diesel that Mazda snuck under the hood of a few thousand of these pickups. It’s a 2.2L (hence the 2200 number) inline-four with 58 hp. I wonder what these things sound like?.. hmm.. Here’s a YouTube video of a similar Perkins diesel Mazda B2200 truck for you clickity-clack fans. There are still a lot of parts available for these trucks from our friends at RockAuto and other vendors. They even have sound-and-heat-deadener carpet for $180, that’s a no-brainer. It doesn’t sound like there’s much work to do on this truck, though, other than the carpet. The seller says that “the last ~2 years these things have been replaced: water pump, alternator, clutch, battery, rear main seal, master cylinder, radiator, oil cooler lines, door seals, rebuilt transmission.” Nice, just get in and drive it home.

Yea, like yesterday, we have so many powerstrokes and cummins I’ll do dangerous things to pass them. Stinky slow road blocks, esp duallys. I’m not against big trucks, I have one, but I dont drive mine in town unless I’m hauling something.

Here in Arizona jacked-up diesel trucks are Daily Drivers that rarely haul or tow anything, are always perfectly clean with fresh Armor All on the tires. Parking lot queens.

I learned to drive stick shift in one of these on the farm. It was my grandfathers. I’d love to have one!

Perkins Diesel? Sounds like farm equipment. Have fun with CAV (Lucas) injection pump! But it will run very well until it gets finicky.
