Lots Of Questions: 1961 Pontiac Catalina

catalina

We don’t know much about this 1961 Pontiac. The seller, a person of few words, tells us that it was a nice one owner car until two years ago. Presumably that’s when the seller purchased the car. It’s located in Upper Black Eddy, Pennsylvania, and is for sale here on eBay. Bidding is at $510, but the reserve hasn’t been met yet. We do know the car has a V8, automatic, four doors and no rust. If it’s the original V8, it will be a 389, but we didn’t even get an underhood picture, so we don’t know for sure. The car does look clean in the poor quality pictures, but again, it’s hard to tell. Yes, it’s frustrating – there are a lot of questions to ask! But the car does look solid, maybe one of you lives close enough to take a look? What do you think?

Another Pennsylvania, car for sale on Ebay or Craigslist, either all you people are broke and have to unload your wheels / mentally challenged car hoarders / Greedy little flippers. Joking aside this looks like a nice car and I like it much better than the land yachts being featured before but that’s just me. Sorry not trying to offend anyone here you just have to know me to appreciate my crude car humor. Yes I wish he had shot a picture of the engine bay and most likely a 2 barrel 389ci. This would make a really nice cruise night car even with 4 doors. Wish it was closer but then again we are talking Pennsylvania, where all the car hoarders are. Yuckity Yuk !!!

Looks like the ’61 that my dad bought new, trading the ’60 Cat from the previous year as he climbed the Pontiac model a year at a time ’til the ’65 Star Chief, all while working for Chrysler Corporation Aerospace in Huntsville Alabama at the dawn of the NASA era. Stickered for $3400+, he traded every year for under a grand ‘difference’. Nice cars, and Pontiac’s lowest-dollar sedan models always looked great if the shiny trim around the windows and full hubcaps were ordered. That company was at the peak of its charm by ’61 but the best was yet to come…

In the early 80’s, my room mate and I rode our motorcycles up to Cleveland where his family was from. His grand father had a 64′ impala SS in the garage. Black with red interior. The car looked great, but you could literally poke holes in the fenders with your fingers. Road salt kills……

When I was 6 years old, my uncle bought a brand new ’61 Catalina, 2 door, bubble top as soon as he got out of the service. It was 1 of the first cars I remember riding in. I remember, it was a 389, 2V, with kind of a spider intake manifold (you could see the valley cover) and there was a big screwdriver under the manifold, and we couldn’t get it out ( without taking the manifold off, so he left it there). It was a cool car and my uncle had a heavy foot. He is in his 80’s now, and sadly, doesn’t remember the car. This is a beautiful car, but, for a car ad, leaves us with very little to go on. And I have news for you, I like a 4 door. It’s a lot easier getting in and out for an old fart, like me.

I with you Howard. Four doors are a great convenience. And, as I have always preferred the luxury aspect of a car, four doors are the way to go.
