Low-Mile Survivor: 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo

To purists of the Porsche brand, the 944 Turbo is one of a handful of models snobbishly referred to as a “Poor Man’s Porsche” – though anyone who has owned and maintained one could surely argue that point. However, with nearly 50/50 weight distribution, a feisty powerplant, and fantastic handling skills, the 944 Turbo has finally earned its overdue recognition with ‘80s car enthusiasts in recent years. If you’re hoping to get your hands on a clean and low-mile example before prices climb even further upwards, check out this 1986 model that is here on eBay.

This 944 Turbo is available in Delmar, Delaware, and the seller provides a CarFax report showing no accidents and damage to the vehicle. The seller claims the sports car was garage kept its whole life, making this a rust-free example.

The vehicle is mechanically stock and it still has its original coat of paint. There are a few easily removable aesthetic modifications, such as the plasti-dipped gold wheels, the Porsche decal on the side, and the wheel spacers.

You’ll find that the black interior is very clean. There are no cracks in the dash or any tears in the seats, and new floor mats really tie the cabin together.

Just 47,138 miles are on this Porsche, with both the brakes and the timing belt replaced at 40,000 miles.

Plenty of other new maintenance items were also installed within the last 60 days, including an oil and filter change, hood and trunk struts, air filter, fuel pump and filter, fuel lines, battery, and starter. Additionally, braking, power steering, and cooling systems all received flushes and new fluids.

The Buy it Now price for this 944 Turbo is $23,999, though reasonable offers are also considered. Could you see yourself owning this clean and well-maintained Porsche?

I was a service advisor at Carrera Porsche-Audi in El Paso from 1980 to 1983 and drove quite a few Porsches. The 944 handled beautifully and felt great in your hands. Terrific car.

I find the phrase “poor man’s Porsche” utterly ridiculous. I don’t know any poor men that can afford a $902 fuel pump, a $435 starter, etc. etc. If you can afford to buy and maintain any Porsche, you are far from poor.

Not being a FAN,,of the air cooled Porsches, I’ve always liked this model. The one thing I could never understand, is why car makers had to, in big letters, boast that it has a turbocharger. Big deal, every truck on the highway has a turbo. That, and I just couldn’t own a car with a cam belt. Sorry, chain or gears, but no belts. Scramble this, and any interference motor, good if it shreds. To me, a cam belt is nothing but a ploy to sell more engine parts or cars themselves.

    My first Porsche was a Black/Black 944 Turbo (951). Great car but I traded it for a 911 because…well, 911.

Poor Man’s Porsche is a description of what the car becomes AFTER you’ve bought it.
