Low Mileage Drop Top: 1986 Mustang GT Convertible

This four-eyed 1986 Ford Mustang GT convertible is said to be a nicely preserved survivor with mileage believed to be just over 50,000. The car has resided in dry states like Wyoming and Colorado, which has helped preserve its bodywork and allow it to retain many of its original cosmetic features. The color scheme incorporates a white top over a red body with gray lower cladding and a red cloth interior. This Mustang GT is equipped with an automatic transmission and is said to run well with no significant issues aside from the usual hiccups like non-working A/C. Find it here on eBay where bidding is approaching $7,000 with no reserve.

The four-eyed Mustangs are a personal favorite of mine, as I’ve always felt they had a touch more “personality” than the later cars with the flush headlamps. The color combo with the white top is an interesting one, and I question whether the top is original given black would seem to be the more obvious choice. The seller does state the top is original, however, so my assumption could be incorrect. Don’t pay attention to the California blue plates – the seller says he curiously used those as a prop at a recent Cars & Coffee – but the states the Mustang has resided in haven’t hurt its chances at emerging as a rust-free example with no evidence of heavy paint fading or other damage. It also appears to remain bone-stock, down to the dual exhausts.

The interior does look a bit lighter than it did when it left the factory, a not-uncommon scenario in cars where the roof disappears. The seller notes that the top may appear to be sound, but that it does have some watch areas and he could see the need for replacement sooner than later if the roof is lowered frequently. The door pockets are sagging, a common Fox body ailment and the seller claims that while the A/C is operational, it needs the classic recharge. The dash pad is said to be untracked and the door panels, carpet, and console are all in good shape. Overall, while it could be improved with some fabric dying and other cosmetic work, I’d just worry about the top and leave the rest alone.

The venerable 5.0L V8 appears to be modification-free under the hood, and the seller claims it runs well and shifts smoothly. He does acknowledge there are relatively few records with the car, so you won’t find much in the way of a paper trail once it is delivered. He does note a slight oil leak that he attributes to a weak valve cover gasket, but otherwise, you shouldn’t see much in the way of fluid stains in your driveway the next morning. The market for Fox bodies has been trending upwards for some time, but you can still buy a nice one for reasonable money. This clean Colorado four-eyed Fox looks like a great cruiser and one that shouldn’t cost much to own over the long term.

Good write-up Jeff. Very thorough ebay description; the seller has owned many Fox Bodies. The car does exhibit the common Four-Eye wear items, like the fading upholstery and sagging map pockets. But overall this looks like a very solid, unabused car which would make for a fine cruiser at a reasonable price.

I agree with you. The “four-eyes” and earlier so-called “Fox-bodies” were far better looking than the hideous later ones. And this is a GT..meaning “V8”, even though probably not a strong one. No matter, when it gets tired pull it and replace it with a crate motor.

been sellin for bout 10, 15 yrs now (early, better preserved). Comin into their own now (buyin age cohort) for purchases, and mods (after mrkt has suspension, the efi kits, other goodies). Get one, wrench, have a buddy do the body, split the sales (not my business model – hobby = free car to drive awhile). BUT as they “come into their own” the damn car auctions and net sales swiftly blow that model out of my reach. Onto the nxt…
