This 1991 Ford Mustang LX could be a cheap entry point into Fox-body ownership, and an especially good deal given it’s said to have just 51,000 miles on the clock. The Mustang features the preferred 5.0L V8 under the hood and has been upgraded to the pony style wheels. The cosmetics look a touch rough, and certainly more tired than you’d expect for the low mileage, but if the nose were repainted the chrome strips deleted, we’d probably feel differently. Find it here on craigslist on Long Island for $6,500.
The Mustang isn’t the most desirable spec, featuring an automatic transmission with a pewter-colored cloth interior. The seller doesn’t provide much information about the Mustang, but the background of the photos would suggest it came into a tow yard or salvage facility as a donated or vehicle left in a departed owner’s garage. The seat cushions would suggest an older owner with back or hip problems, perhaps furthering the notion that it was left behind by an older owner. It’s hard to say for sure whether this is the interior of a low mileage specimen, but it isn’t in bad shape, either. My eyes go to the steering wheel, which doesn’t show much wear.
The chrome strips on the lower doors and fenders/rear quarters is a pretty standard 90s upgrade, with plenty of owners buying into the notion that it looks better and protects against rock chips. Of course, depending on how it was applied, all it may have done is trapped moisture behind the glued-on panel while otherwise cheapening the Mustang’s appearance. There’s some evidence of spot-treated rust repair on the driver’s fender, which wouldn’t surprise me at all for a northern vehicle. As you can see in the background of the photos, it sure looks like the Mustang is in a salvage yard.
The backseat looks largely unused, and the side panels and seat belt are light enough in color that they’d quickly expose any dirty handprints or other evidence of misuse and neglect. The seller doesn’t provide much in the way of info about the Mustang’s past or any glaring mechanical issues, other than to confirm it’s a one-owner car. If the cosmetics were a little tidier, I’d say the asking price was quite fair, but given it has some minor needs to sort out so that it truly reflects those low mileage claims, I’d want to see some room on the asking price before taking it home. It’s probably rougher than it appears. The lack of quality pictures and a basic description are concerning. If the budget allows, I’d keep looking for one in better shape, even if it cost more. These 5.0 LX’s are still gaining in popularity, however, they can still be found at reasonable prices by those willing to put in the work. It would be wise for that person to keep looking, especially if they want one with a 5spd manual.

These are still easy to find in good shape..a customer of mine bought a 93 about 2 weeks ago 92000 miles original blue paint (which looks better than this) with a few upgrades under the hood..cobra wheels and gave $2200. Not a bad deal but of course the area I live in is overrun with mustang’s from bone stock to mild to stupid crazy
