1968 Oldsmobile 442 Convertible

4-4-2 stood for 4-speed, 4-barrel, and 2 (dual) exhaust. That sounds like a good combination to me! This car has all of those and more. Well, apart from the convertible top, not much more. It was ordered without all the power options, so that means it’s going to take a little more muscle to turn and stop, but it also makes me think that someone was more concerned about performance than comfort. Or perhaps they were just cheap? I like to think that anyone who would purchase a car outfitted with a 400 cubic inch engine, floor shift transmission, and convertible top is more into having fun than saving money though.     also came new with bench seat and a power top. motor needs put together and needs all new glass, that might be costly. drum brakes! needs a lot more detailed photos if seller wants that kind of money. can anyone decode the id plate in the last photo?

    442 is for four hundred four barrel dual exhaust, they can and are also automatics

      And three speeds. My sister had a very nice 68 back in the day with a three speed. It only had 37,000 when she bought it, in the early 70’s. Then the so called gas shortage hit, and she traded it for an econo car. Still wished I would of had the money at the time. So for sure by 68 it was and maybe always was 400 4 barrel dual exhaust.

    In the late ’60’s power brakes and steering were considered power robbing by street racers. That might explain the lack of same.

      My w30 does not have power brakes and you would never know it. The manual front discs from GM were pretty awesome.

        Power brakes in this era also tended to be very touchy. Some folks avoided them because one quick stab at the pedal and your nose would be on the dash.

    In ’64 it was 4 bbl, 4 speed, dual exhausts=442. Even with motor disassembled, this appears to be a good buy…if only it was closer, it would be added to my 442 collection. mmmmm not my fave color but I could live with it….

    Remember back in the day, all the things that we count on as being part of the whole car were extra cost options. Power steering? Extra. Power brakes? Extra. Disk brakes? extra.

      Disk brakes were extra, if available.
