Lustre Survivor: 1963 Mercury Marauder

Update 4/12/13 – This one has been relisted here on eBay with updated photos.

From 3/22/13 – A light pink Mercury Marauder might not sound all that enticing for most, but this 1963 Mercury Marauder is a documented survivor that came from the factory with the S-55 Performance option. It was found in a barn in California, where it had been stored for 34 years. It made the trip across the country to Florida and has just recently been listed on the Pensacola Craigslist.

To complement the Pink Lustre paint, the interior came in Light Rose vinyl. It appears to be in good shape, but shows some color fade. As well as performance upgrades, the S-55 option added front bucket seats with center counsel. This one was ordered with the 300 hp 390 cui V8, but it could have been ordered with up to a 405 hp 406 V8.

The seller doesn’t state what they are asking for this survivor, but we would assume they aren’t selling it cheap. They have gone to great lengths to document that this is a true survivor and have only done the necessary things to make it drivable. Even if you’re not interested in a Pink Marauder, it is at least interesting to see a survivor in this kind of shape. If you want to take a closer look and are in the Pensacola area, it is going to be on exhibit at the Pensacola Mustang Show this weekend. If you make it, let us know how it looks!

I would buy it if I had the space to store it until June, That is when the snow is gone up here in Maine.

    • Joey K.

@HL – I agree! Its rough being into old steel up here in Maine! Heck – I’m waiting for another week or so to get the motorcycles out again!

      • RegM

I’m in Maine too. It’s the middle of Apr. and still only 36° where I am. I have a ’64 Ford Galaxie 500 XL and this would look nice beside it in the garage.
I have had the Harley out for a couple of real short rides. and I got the ’64 out once.

  2. Doug

    Gorgeous. Look at that interior.

  3. René

Sure would like to own and drive this one!

    • RA Sebetto

Car still for sale. I have it in Ohio now.

    • Barry L Klotz

I had a 63 1/2 . It was Red with Black vinyl top. Black naughahide interior. 390 with 3speed in the floor. Loved that car, wish I had it now.

Always great to see real survivors, even the pink ones….Pensicola the other end of the state a good 8 hr drive so I won’t be making that, they should bring it this way we have a couple of auction’s going on this weekend.

    • RA Sebetto

Car still for sale. I have it in OHIO now…

  5. twwok

Wouldn’t have a problem driving this one at all. Don’t normally think of an S-55 in pink.. Wouldn’t surprise me if it was ordered for the lady in a Mercury dealers life.
Had a neighbor who had a 63 Breezeway in this color.

  6. james_earle

Looks like a Mary Kay car

  7. Rick Rothermel

Beautiful car, truly odd originally but great that it still exists in this condition.

‘Pink Marauder’ sounds like a West Hollywood SuperHero…

    • paul

Sort of a female Wyat Earp.

  8. Karen

I have a dog named Marauder. I keep telling everyone there is a car named Marauder now I can show them. Beautiful!!!!!!!!!

  9. FRED

IF ELVIS COULD DRIVE AROUND IN A PINK CADDY I GUESS I WOULD BE OK IN A PINK MERC. AFTER ALL I DID RIDE AROUND ON A PINK AND BLACK CUSTOM FULL DRESS HARLEY FOR A FEW YEARS AND NOT A SOUL SAID ANYTHING ABOUT ME ON IT.

  10. DC Refugee

Brings back memories — my parents had a light brown ’63 Monterrey with a 390, the one with the retractable rear window canted toward the front of the car. Interiors appear to have been similar (except for the bucket seats and console).

    Lots of memories…

No matter how cool and unusual a Pink 1963 Mercury will still be a hard sell if the seller is expecting big money. Rare and unusual does not always equate to someone throwing down money. I knew of a 65 Maurader 390/4speed one of 67 built and the seller couldn’t get $3000. for it if he begged.

    • paul

True & right you are, but as for me, when I go to a car show I am always drawn to the odd stuff, you always see the 57 Chevy’s, 69 Camaro’s,68 Mustangs, etc.it all gets a little old until you see something like this.

    • RA Sebetto

That’s a 65…NOT a 63…which is the FIRST Year for this car, And what it has on its “TAG” is what makes it rare also.

  12. David

Car is now listed on eBay with updated photos and video.

    • Jesse Mortensen Jesse Mortensen Staff

Thanks for the update David. We have added the auction link above.

  13. Dan Farrell

The interior looks exactly like the 63 Galaxie 500 convertible I had long ago. Not sure about the Mercs. but when ford switched to the fast back roofline in the middle of 63 they also dropped the 406 in favor of the 427. I think the switch was prompted by racing and gave the car improved aerodynamic performance on the high speed NASCAR tracks. That was when the cars on the track were actually made from real street cars and not from the ground up race cars.

  14. ken keller

in 63 the Maurader and the Monterey could be ordered with the “S-55” package which included high compression 427 -410 hp with single quad and 427-425 hp.Dual quad… I owned one of few special S-55 equipped Montereys,,same car as this except different roofline w/roll down rear window (turnpike cruiser) breezeway..Ragtops same.

  15. john

    i have a 63 monterey im restoring

  16. Dolphin Member

Looks like a great survivor. Needs almost nothing except to be driven.

Maybe it stayed unmolested because it looks like it belongs in the Art Deco district of Miami Beach (it was shipped to Florida, after all) instead of at a drag strip or drift competition.

    • David

Actually it’s spent very little time in Florida. Only a few years and just this past month on the road.

It’s a California car, through and through.

      • RA Sebetto

And now it resides in OHIO

  17. Phil

That looks like the same roof I have on my 63 1/2Ford Galaxy 500 fastback 352 2bbl bigblock Cruz o matic, barn find, I have covered with stuff, in preservation mode, in the corner of my garage. Interior is similar.

  18. Bernie H

WOW, We drove one of these to spring break in Florida from Peoria, IL, in 1964. The first driver got a ticket before we got out of Illinois, the second driver did the same in Kentucky. That car would cruise at 90+ on the early Interstates all night, I drove and got lucky!. It was terrific, 4 guys finding 4 ugly chicks made for good times in Florida.

    • paul

From the sound of this you didn’t get lucky!

  19. David

Swapped out the stock wheels with the Magnums from my Mustang this weekend. Wow, do those wheels toughen up the car! I provided a link to more photos on the eBay ad.

  20. David

Very nice car but I think there should be 100,00 in front of the miles.

  21. Dan Farrell

The one thing I remember about the 406/427 package was that there was no warranty on the drive train.

  22. Jesse Mortensen Jesse Mortensen Staff

The seller ended the auction early.

  23. S.Brodie

The Super Marauder for ’63 was a 427 engine option. I found a ’64 once that had the Super Marauder on the valve covers but by ’64 they had gone backwards to the 390, still a nice car. This one listed here is beautiful but I’d like to see the option list to confirm engine size as the 427 are super valueable. The overall car was manufactured in 3 quality ranges with the Park Lane being the top end, and Meteor bottom, can’t remember the middle, possibly Montcalm.

  24. E ROBO

i own a 1958 mercury monterey and because it is pink except for the white stripes down the sides everybody thinks its a cadillac because you don,t see them often but these late fifties american cars certainly turn heads

  25. Fred

a duel quad 427 was offered in the last half of the 63 model year. I owned a 63 1/2 R CODE Galaxy Convertible.I raced a 427 Merc HT and got beat back in 64 on Long Island.
