Midas Edition: 1979 International Scout

This 1979 International Harvester Scout is a rare Midas edition, loaded up with all sorts of custom touches courtesy of the Midas Van Conversion Company. In addition to its custom graphics, the Scout featured a tricked-out interior that is in surprisingly complete condition. This example here on eBay is a project, but has also had a fair amount of recent maintenance thrown at it. The seller is asking $16,000 or best offer.

The Midas editions came with unique paint and appliques like we see here, and this example’s vibrant exterior graphics are still in very good condition. The seller notes the Scout has spent its entire life in climates that are dry and not prone to producing rust-buckets, as this Scout doesn’t appear to suffer from any major corrosion issues. Mileage is noted as being just under 75K.

Most of the more novel features are found inside the Scout, with swivel seats, shag carpet, custom upholstery, dual sunroofs, reading lights, matching door panels, and more. This Scout seemingly retains all of the custom touches that set the Midas editions apart, which is almost as incredible as this example not being a total rust bucket. The seller notes it also has cruise.

Engine-wise, a 345 V8 is under the hood. The seller says it runs well enough, even to the point that you could use it as-is without going overboard restoring. Some of the work he has completed includes new steering knuckles, fuel injection, spark plugs and wires, radiator, A/C compressor and drier, and more. This Scout’s appearance and options make it hard to ignore.

I love Scouts, but it would take a die hard Scout fanatic to resto this Scout Special Edition back to original with shag carpet.

I’ve been told I have the Midas Touch. Everything I touch turns into a muffler.
    Fuel Injection???

Hamilton Fuel injection is an A+ upgrade for Scouts. Bill Hamilton makes systems for many other orphan and non-orphan makes too, using mostly off the shelf GM parts. Just installed it on my Scout this past weekend and highly recommend his system.

i dont know how many know this but international when new from manufacture BALANCED & BLUEPRINTED there engines. international had some of the smoothest running engines at that time. it seems a shame the bodys did not get the care like the engines. but we were buying carbon free steel from japan at the time. japan was using all the carbon in there steel to get a foot hold in the american economy at the time. this is why japanese cars of the same era are practically rust free and why american vehicles just melted.

I dont know where you’re from, but in New England ALL Japanese cars rusted away faster than a discarded beer can. If they were using carbon steel, it sure wasn’t in their cars . You were lucky to get 6 -7 years out of them before they were too rotted to repair

16,000 and all the floors are rotted out in it. This guy is nuts no wonder it didn’t sell. I had a Scout a long time ago and I loved it. It was older than this one. It was in a lot better shape. I don’t see much tricked out really in the interior. It looks sadly worn to me. I think this guy is off a big Zero.

I owned a clone to this truck. First thing that went was carpet, door panels and stripes. It was not rust free in 96, when I acquired it. But I did repaint in “Rally Gold” aka school bus yellow.
