More of Dan’s Discoveries

Dan H's Sightings

After featuring some of Dan’s discoveries a few weeks ago, he sent us even more of his finds. We thought we would post his most recent sightings with the same challenge of identifying each car. This time around there are 32 cars to identify, as you can see Dan has been very busy. Can you identify them all?

Dan H's Sightings 1

Dan let us in on a little secret about how he finds all these cars, so we thought we’d share it with you. Not only does Dan love finding cars, he also loves to ride his bicycle, so he’s merged the two. As he’s pedaling along, he’s always on the lookout for something interesting.

Dan H's Sightings 3

Dan came across this beauty years ago, but there was a bit of confusion on the seller’s asking price. He thought they wanted $1,500, but when he showed up with the cash, they told him $15,000. Feeling it wasn’t worth that kind of money, he passed on it. Three years later the owner gave Dan a call and told him he could have it for $1k! He grabbed some cash and got over there quick.

Dan H's Sightings 24

We want to thank Dan for sharing all his finds with us and we hope he will keep it up! If you are like Dan and always coming across interesting finds, we would all enjoy seeing them! Happy hunting!

My first guess on the Yellow car covered in Leaves is either a Volvo or a K car possibly?

The yellow car is a Volvo. What I can’t tell with all the brush on top is whether it is a Bertone or just a two door coupe. Nice deal on the MG TF but it sure looks like it has had a rough life. Stone guards and roll bar seem to indicate some extreme use in its past.

I’ll weigh in on the ones I know well.
Mercedes SL most likely is a 72/73 US model with Euro headlights, but could be 280SL, 350SL or 450SL, but an early one.
Porsches could be a range of years as they did not make yearly changes. (Yellow 911/2 is 1973 1/2 or earlier; Red 911 is 1974 or older ’til early mid eighties)
Same for Citroen SM and VWs.
The Bug convertible could be earlier than ’79 as early as 70(?).
        Interceptor is pre-1974.

Yep, I think its a Merak, but the overriders might be early US.

The Challenger is definitely a `70/`71 because of the marker lights. If the center caps are original then that narrows it down to a `71 (`71 was dark gray, `70 was silver). The Charger is a `68, identifiable by the round taillights and the small round side-marker holes. A `69 Charger has horizontal taillights and rectangular side-markers.

The Jensen Interceptor is a 1969 Mark II. Not much changed on the outside between Mark I, II and III, but the bumpers was mounted higher from 1969, and the first cars of Mark II had still the steel rims as opposed to aluminum, which came at the start of 1970. Therefore this is a 1969, with a 6,3 liter Bigblock V8 engine, putting out 330 HP. What a great car!

Check the Galaxie when I enlarged the pic I see it’s not the full size Ford so I’ll go with the smaller Fairlane.

Jesse, Dan, The MG TF is likely to have period racing history. Dan, if you still have the car please contact me as I’d be happy to help connect you to people that can help track down its history.

The narrow roll bar, head light screens and lack of bumpers are a dead giveaway. If indeed it was raced in the 50’s and 60’s its value will go up and its a car that should be brought back to the vintage racing fold.

PS: I am not trying to make a $$ in any way. I grew up in SCCA from the early 70’s, my family dates to 1954 in SCCA when my grandfather bought a new XK120, my dad was friends with the Archer Brother’s out of Duluth, and I ran a race prep shop for 13 years and have worked for sanctioning bodies and in event management since 2002. I’ve been racing since 1986. Like you all I love cars but have a special place for old racing cars!

      Greetings car-buffs!
I’ve been shinin’ on this old mg like you’ve never seen! Been thru 3 bags of steel wool and countless towel/rags. It’s lookin’ like a car again instead of a leaf catcher! The old willow tree protected the mg pretty good, the wood floorboards are still nice enough for me. We got it to turn over from the key until the solenoid lit up & glowed like a pumpkin. Woah, time to clean up some contacts I suppose. Bryan you have a keen eye. The mg was a participant in the first ever desert rally in ’55. There are many plaques and I just got a folder with correspondence from E. Moss himself about a supercharger installation. There is also a receipt from the purchase of a sherrock (sp?) supercharger from 1967. We have an old shed to clear out and hopefully the s/c is there! Also the rear wheels are Italian aluminium for racin’ while the fronts are steel for durability? Well heck, time to go ride my bike to the garage and shine~ shine~ shine ~

Charles, I would have to disagree with you on the 69 dodge charger. Judging by the tail lights that appears to be a 68. The 69 had 2 bar like tail lights.

    @KE100
You are absolutely correct. It is a 1968 Charger, and I was just typing too fast, and typed a 9 instead of an 8. My Mom had a 69 and it did have the bar tail lights instead of this three lense cluster as on the 1968. I stand corrected.

Three lense cluster meaning the two larger round red taillights and the triangular white reverse light nestled between them.

The yellow car is an ’80s Dodge Omni. The Cadillac is a ’54.

The black Mustang is an 84 or early 85 SVO. No third brake light. The white one I can’t tell.

The red Beetle appears to be a 71 – 73 due to the Super Beetle front and the non-shock absorbing bumpers. The convertible Beetle is a 71 or 72 since it is a Super Beetle with a flat windshield.
