Muscle Car Projects: 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle

One of the most often cloned muscle cars is the 1970 Chevelle SS396 (or 454). One reason is there has been plenty of supply, with more than 300,000 Malibu Sport Coupes built that model year. The seller has not one, not two, but three of these cars which are identically painted (or primered) and already have the 396 induction hoods. Located in Camarillo, California, the trio is priced individually between $19,000-25,000 here on craigslist and the seller advises checking with your wife before taking the plunge! A tip of the fedora to rex m for another great tip.

Chevrolet rolled out the Chevelle in 1964 (along with other GM divisions) to enter the new mid-sized market of cars that had been blossoming. The Chevelle got its first major redesign in 1968 and that generation would prove quite popular (1968-72). Because of their good looks and speed, the SS 3396 has become the subject of many a tribute car, and we believe that’s what the seller was starting to do with these three 1970 Malibu’s.

The seller does not claim that any of the three are anything but regular Malibu’s in some state of change. It’s hard to tell them apart as all three are black and have the same white stripes on the hoods. But all three bodies look good and could be rust-free (or the rust has already been addressed). Depending on which one you choose, you can have a 454 cubic-inch V8, a 350, or no motor or transmission at all. Let’s take a quick look at each car which all come with clean titles and the seller is adamant about accepting no trades. He needs to clear the driveway.

Chevelle — $19,000

This one has no motor or transmission. The condition of the black interior is unknown and this one may be the one with the windshield missing. Wearing silver wheels, this could serve as a blank canvas for someone looking to build an SS replica.

Chevelle — $24,000

It has the 350 V8 with a 12-bolt rear end and is said to run. I think it’s the one with the red wheels and a black interior.

Chevelle — $25,000

This Chevy may be the closest to what the goal was. It has a rebuilt 454 V8 that does not appear to be in the car. It also has an M-22 Muncie 4-speed manual transmission, disc brakes (like the SS), and a 12-bolt rear end. Guessing it’s the one with the white interior.

From what i can see in the pictures is that all 3 car’s are finished in a black primer which has no shine. They could be a great basis to build a car the way you want.

Too bad the seller can’t find a movie being produced with a flat black primered Chevelle as the star.

Some group of Shriners should buy them all and create a “Legend of Ricky Bobby” parade drill team.

This seems like a joke. All 3 are overpriced for what they are, which isn’t much. Good luck…
