Never Left Town: 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler

b1

This rare 1970 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler was originally purchased from the Lakeland, Florida Lincoln-Mercury dealer and apparently never left town. It’s up for sale here on eBay, where the buy-it-now is $8,600 and bidding is at $5,000 without a reserve. At first glance, the car looks pretty solid, and the ad states that it has not been repainted and has no body filler.

b2

The Spoiler option package took the regular Cyclone to another performance level, featuring a functional hood scoop, a 429 cubic inch V-8, front and rear spoilers (of course, considering the name) and a host of other high-performance items. Some of those items remain on this car, and it does have a clear Florida title. However, you can see some of the rust here on the front fender, and that’s not all of it. The ad says the hood needs to be replaced, so I’m guessing there’s more rust that we can’t see in this picture.

b3

Unfortunately, the rust isn’t contained to the hood and front fender. While this trunk lid looks superficially OK on the outside, the view of the underside is almost horrifying. I suppose a skilled body person could fix it, but I think sourcing another one would be in order. I imagine finding a replacement full-width tail light bezel housing won’t be easy, either.

b4

Another issue value-wise is that while this is a 429 V-8, to the seller’s credit they explain that it’s not the original one. The original engine could have been either a Cobra Jet or Super Cobra Jet with a dual-point distributor; we don’t know the specification of the replacement engine. We also are told it doesn’t run, so even if you want to keep this engine in the car, some work will be necessary.

b5

See that gaping hole? That’s where a four-speed transmission used to live. While the manual transmission car is desirable, that’s yet another expensive and difficult to find part to source if you want to return the car to original specification. What would you do with this genuine barn find?

Wow! This one almost sold me until I started reading about the rust (that I can’t see). I can see it on the deck lid, but not any good pictures of the rest of the rust areas.

This one would have to be looked at in person. I like it, but my gut says run, and don’t look back. Maybe I’m wrong……………

Was a very cool car once upon a time. I’ve always liked these colors.

I asked my dog what he thought of it, all he could say was rough!! Seriously though there was a time when this was a gas sucking fire snorting beast that any muscle car guy would have killed to have. Today not so much.

Neat car but only because its a 4 speed, Can’t stand the icky butterscotch color though.. Back around ’71-’72, knew a guy that had a ’58 Corvette and repainted it that same color, side coves and all. Now I know where the color came from. Made everyone wanna barf at the time. We gave hin such a hard time that after only a year or so he repainted it red w/ white coves.
