Nicely Preserved: 1970 VW Beetle Convertible

This 1970 Volkswagen Beetle convertible is said to be a genuine 48,000 mile example, and it looks quite nice in pictures. The Bug is being sold due to a family illness, and the seller claims it runs straight and true down the road. While Beetle convertibles aren’t necessarily hard to find, this one looks quite cherry in pictures. Find it here on eBay with bidding approaching $9K and no reserve in sight.

The top appears to be in excellent condition, with nice tension in its fitment and no cloudiness in the back window. As a new convertible owner, I am learning all about how much of a maintenance nightmare a soft top can be, and this one looks good enough to be a recent replacement. The factory hubcaps are a nice look, and the running boards appear to be in good shape.

The clean theme continues to the interior, where the seats, dash, and door panels all appear to be in excellent shape. The storage shelf beneath the dash isn’t torn up, and the dash appears to be crack-free. There’s some puckering of the material near the top-right of the driver’s seat, but that could just be an illusion. Really, throw some Sisal floormats in here and call it a day.

The backseat looks unused, and door jambs show nicely matched paint to the cream exterior. Tires are new and the seller holds a clean, clear title in hand. When it comes to air-cooled VWs, basketcases are a dime a dozen – so it really does make sense to buy the best one you can, especially if the cost of entry isn’t too high. Would you take your Beetle in hard- or soft-top form?

This seller is also listing another Beetle Convertible. It’s a ’76. It has the exact same description, and the bid is at $6200.

Being a Wisconsin car and a ragtop, you won’t have to worry about rust. The convertible made the meager heater, even less meager, and when the leaves were gone, so was the car, back in a garage. I’ve been checking VW prices a lot, this is about right for a standard beetle ragtop. I’m not looking for a ragtop, but if this is out of your range, Super Beetle convertibles come up all the time for half this and are nicer cars, This is still a nice VW too.

I agree, the SB are better with a more “powerful” engine-60HP & 1600 CC! I had 3 SB before and has a Rare one-the Super Sports SBeetle with the lime green special edition paint and sports seats up front. You don’t see many of those around. I think I’ll keep it around longer. They’re good cheap and easy to repair cars….

Nice beetle, wouldnt mind owning it, the back widow isnt cloudy because its glass, kinda too new for delamination. I found the heaters work good enough to keep the chill at bay, definately not like a hot water system but warm enough to be comfortable.

The only flaw I see is that it is missing the two reflectors that mounted to the rear bumper. That was a 1970, one year item, so they may be hard to find. If I had the room, I would love to bring her home.

I wouldn’t mind owning one of these. I’d keep it in my barn for a sunny day. But it will cost me a grand to ship to Pennsylvania.

Tempting thought, moosie. But I think my dog is too old to handle it.

It took 60 bids to get to $8.852, and it sold.
