Nicely Weathered: 1963 Datsun L320 Pickup

datsun

From Barn Finds reader Jeff J: Saw this and thought barnfind. I really enjoy the submissions people put up. Keep up the good work.  Thanks, Jeff, we love the submissions you folks send us! This Datsun L320 pickup is one of 8,232 sold between 1962 and 1965. The L320 is the standard version; there was an “NL” model with a longer body. The body, which I would imagine is the main concern on these, appears quite solid but weathered. I find myself really appreciating the front end styling on this particular one, which was unique to the 1963 models. The little truck is located in Fultonville, New York and is for sale here on craigslist for $3,500 obo. The seller describes it as needing a tune up and minor brake work, but having a body in great shape. It looks like some work has been done to the passenger side sill; I’d want to make sure that was done well. There’s also a suspicious-looking spot on the bed right behind the cab. There’s a web resource here if you’re interested in learning more about these little trucks, with an active forum. Would you drive it as-is, or paint it?

I’ve got to admit that these import pickups are getting more popular amongst the restoration crowd. I once had a ’71 Toyota which I absolutely loathed and despised yet, every time I drive past the alley where it has sat for 30 years, I think about buying it back and restoring it. Of course it needs a complete bed because what isn’t rusted beyond repair is smashed. This truck looks like a worthwhile restoration but I think that by the time you get through with it, you’ll have spent more than what it would take to restore something made here. But I’m sure that someone would be willing to pay the price.

I apologize, I am about to get off of the subject…but is it me or does anyone else feel that our school system has failed? When the word “break” is used to describe how on a vehicle is equipped to stop, then where do you use the word “brake” ? I am tired of seeing what is about to begin to run our country, as far as next generations. Pushing kids through school is unacceptable! That is my and yours tax dollars that is being spent!…And do not even get me started on the use of texting!

ben; having worked for several years at a company that administers standardized tests for states I must agree with you, at least in principle. Kids need to be educated, not taught answers to tests so that they can be shoved up to the next grade! When I was in my twenties I never understood how elderly people said they were ‘ready to die’ but personally, nearing the age of retirement, I’m not looking forward to seeing what the next generation is going to do to this country. I am very much afraid that within the next 50-100 years America will lose it’s seat in the G-8 confrences…

I definitely agree with you, and if it seems a bit off-topic, it actually applies to all social media sites. I find it very distracting when words aren’t used properly. In fact it tends to cloud the comment(s) to the point that you often have to spend time trying to understand what the person is saying. I got my knuckles busted many times for not using correct spelling/grammar and I’ve attempted to teach my kids (and now my grandkids) the same principles (even if the schools cannot be bothered). I’ve seen people from non-English speaking origins comment on this site and they’re doing a much better job than others who were raised (and educated) here. I even try to use proper punctuation/spelling when texting.

Now I admit that I’ve got a long way to go. My conversational English sometimes borders on (as my late father would put it) CONVERSATIONAL MILITARY, where one nasty word seems to work as principle: noun, verb, pronoun, adverb, etc. I often catch myself after talking with someone who I shouldn’t be talking like that to, and I start questioning myself: ‘Did I say what I think I said to the pastor?’

Anyways, I’ve made some friends here and sure don’t want to offend or lose them because of some spelling/punctuation things. Just try to do a little betterrest???

This checks all the boxes for me: rare early japanese, good support forums and I could use a pickup for Home Depot runs. The only problem is the one common to most vehicles listed on here – 1200 miles for 1200cc of pickup is a bit too far… ^_^
