Rust-Free!? 1968 Porsche 912

This 1968 Porsche 912 is said to be an incredibly straight survivor with none of the typical rust hiding in the nooks and crannies of a long-hood, SWB car. It has had one repaint from new, which sadly covered up one of my favorite air-cooled colors – Bahama Yellow. Regardless, if the seller is accurate in how he describes the straightness of this car, it may be worth stripping it down and repainting back to showroom form. Find it here on eBay with bids to just over $13K with the reserve unmet.

The seller notes he has owned many 911s and 912s of this generation and is familiar with where rust can hide. The battery tray, rockers, floor pans, pedal box, the bottoms of the doors and other areas are hot spots for rust activity, and the seller notes this 912 doesn’t have corrosion in any of those spots. He credits long-time residence in Nevada before coming to Atlanta with helping to preserve it all of these years. He does note the scripts on the engine lid was removed with the remaining holes covered up with body filler.

On that last part, it’s disappointing that you can’t honestly say this 912 has no filler in the body. But by the same token, the seller notes you can simply drill out where a body shop filled in the badge holes and viola – no more filler and an easy change back to completely OEM condition (aside from the paint). The interior is slightly tatty, with tears in the seats and dash pad, but those are easy fixes or a good excuse to hunt down a set of sport bucket seats while these flat-bottomed stockers sit on a shelf somewhere.

The seller notes the engine runs well following some much-needed work after the 912 emerged from storage. This included rebuilding the Solex carbs; cleaning out the gas tank; brake system bled, but some pulling still noted. The seller has not pulled a CoA for the 912, so while the engine numbers match up with a ’68 model, you can’t say this has been verified as a numbers-matching car officially. Bidding seems light at the moment, but the air-cooled market has..well, cooled, at the moment, so do you think this rust-free 912 will clear reserve?

Also, the front and rear side marker lights are gone. They’re a ‘68 only feature.

I’ll have to admit to removing the side lights off a couple of these cars over the years and putting the later lights in with the built in side lights. Just had to do it.

“easy change back to completely OEM condition (aside from the paint)”……….aside from the paint. BIG ASIDE.

I miss my ’70 911 and always think that maybe I should step up to a 912 as the 911 price point is beyond sensible, But I just cant. While the 912 is better balanced and less tail heavy and can be fun to drive, it’s well……just not what I think of as an early P car though that’s somewhat only a personal prejudice.

Having bought a beautiful early 911 with a color change.from Black to Lt Ivory.and really well done at that..I shouldn’t say this but I’d prefer an oem color………..down the road just more valuable to me. Now.
