No Reserve: 1972 Pontiac Trans Am 455 HO

UPDATE 1/18/2021 – This Pontiac Trans Am 455 HO has been relished. There’s no word on why it didn’t sell last time around, but it’s being offered again without a reserve. You can find it here on eBay.

FROM 9/14/2020 – In 1972, GM workers at the F-body plant went on strike so only 1,286 Trans Am were built. This car is cameo white with a blue interior. The car is for sale here on eBay with two days remaining in the auction. The car is located in Yakima, Washington, and is currently bid to $8,600. I own a 1971 Trans Am and it looks identical except mine is in better condition and I can drive it anywhere. These are fun cars that handle well and can be built to generate 500 horsepower pretty easily.

The 1972 Pontiac Trans Am was equipped with the top of the line HO455 motor. The 455 cubic inch V8 engine was similar to the prior year in almost all respects. Due to the new SAE horsepower ratings, the engine was rated at 300 horsepower (net) as compared to the prior year of 335 horsepower (gross). Unfortunately, the original engine is gone and a used up 1975 400 cubic inch V8 engine is in its place.

The car has not run since the early 1990s and needs a full restoration. The blue interior on this car is used up and worn out. The console indicates that the car was equipped with an 8 track player. It is unusual to see the black carpet on these cars so it must have been replaced at some time along with the horn button. This car is equipped with tilt steering, air conditioning, and rear bumperettes.

Here on Barn Finds, we don’t see 1972 Trans Ams don’t come up that often. The most popular combination for big money is Lucerne Blue with a 4 speed. This one is Cameo White and automatic without the original engine. If the frame is good, this one is worth restoring but it is going to need a lot of work. Now that the reserve has been removed, this Trans Am should find a new home and hopefully restored and put back on the road.

Yakima is about 100 mile round trip for me if anyone needs someone to touch it.

This car made me think of the one that Jeff Bridges stole and abused in “Thunderbolt & Lightfoot!”

Good year Trans Am, too bad about the missing 455, not much interest here. Yes, lucerne blue with the white scoop would be tops,, but hey, this ones got blue spots showing up here and there, if that counts at all.

This should come with the Led Zepplin II in the 8 track, cued to “Whole Lotta Love”-it really needs it as it apparently was not.
Then again this may be one of those projects we talk about on BF where the want and imagination are larger than the pocket book.

Kinda makes one wonder … what was going thru our minds back then … with the blue vinyl or red velour interiors.

I would not relish it unless it had the 455

Relished or relisted…either way car is at $6600 with almost 4 days left in auction. I like the car, but at the current price it would be all I’d be willing to pay since the original engine is gone and will probably need everything touched to be back on the street again. $$$ White with blue stripes and blue interior is nice. Looks it may received a repaint sometime and was originally a blue car. Would have to break down the cowl tag info to find out.
