No Reserve: 87k Mile 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix

1977 marked the last year of the 3rd generation of the marvelous Pontiac Grand Prix. This white base Model J is for sale here on eBay at no reserve.  With only 87,000 miles, the seller states that he purchased the car from the original owner who had the car for its first 40 years. The Grand Prix is located in Hauppauge, New York and has 2 days remaining in the auction and the current bid is $3,501. The exterior and trunk show rust damage especially along the bottom of the doors.

The Grand Prix featured a “Command Seat” cockpit-style dash that wraps around the driver. This car is equipped with a full console and bucket seats which enhances the cockpit feel. The interior pictures look impressive and the red upholstery and carpet appear to be in excellent condition. This car is equipped with its original radio, air conditioning, Rally II wheels, automatic transmission, and the base 301 cubic inch V8 engine.

The engine compartment is dirty and is the least impressive picture included of the car. There were three engine options in 1977 (49 states). The base engine was this 301 cubic inch V8 eking out 135 horsepower. Most enthusiasts believe that this was too underpowered for such a large, heavy car. The other optional engines were the 350 cubic inch V8 delivering 160 horsepower and the 400 cubic inch engine pumping out 180 horsepower. California Grand Prixs received the 350 cubic inch and 403 cubic inch Oldsmobile engine to meet emission regulations.

The Grand Prix was first introduced in 1962 but models sold from 1969-1977 were the most popular. The Grand Prix sought to deliver grand touring style with a touch of performance. Unfortunately, this car received the economy-minded 301 cubic inch V8 which is probably only suitable for mild cruising.  What do you think this car is worth?

    I had a 77 with the 400
    Brown with a cream top and a light brown/tan interior.
    I bought it for $150 in 91 to move back to Maryland. It had that common GM problem of the floor pan over the catalytic rotting. I was in CT doing 80 when the rug and my bag of clothes on the floor caught on fire. I cut across 3 lanes and skidded onto the side of the road, luckily there was a gallon of anti freeze in trunk that I doused the fire with.
    I tossed the clothes, cut out the rug and continued on my way.
    I had it for 6 more months until the motor blew on an extremely hot WV day

      I had a 77 GP with the 400. Absolutely loved the car till the day I hit the tree at 60 mph. The officer said it was a beautiful car. It goes without saying I was angry, but I was impressed all I had was a scratched head. No air bags, no seat belt. Just chrome and steel and Character!

    I’m sure with some engine mods you could beef up the horses on this car!!! Not the most desirable of motors but it is a nice body style or just rip the motor and LS it!!!

    Beefing up the 301 in these is more like hamburger helper. They are heavy, and with the 301 as a bonus you got the weakest 3 speed auto GM makes. You would need to save some money to upgrade the trans. I’ve already told the story of mine, but this is a car for leaning and cruising, not performance,

    Still a cool head turner, if the price is right. Mine did not have he cockpit interior – full pimpadelic with velours interior in red, over padded bench and a sunroof.

    I’ve never seen a Pontiac that didn’t double its appeal with rally IIs. Great wheel!

    In 2005, I bought a silver 1977 GP SJ with the 403. Slow as heck, but the car was totally rust free and had 36 options, including the Hurst t tops, snowflake wheels, custom steering wheel, buckets, console, AM FM 8 track, pw, pdl, every lighting option and the wide body moldings. The window sticker was close to $8,000. I kept it only two years and like an idiot sold it because I lost my garage space. I could not bear to see it rot in the lousy Pennsylvania weather we have here. I had the VIN run by a cop friend of mine and the car is in Texas. I tried to buy it back, but the guy won’t budge. Bought the car off eBay, flew one way to Raliegh, NC, and drove it home to Pennsylvania. Didn’t miss a beat. By far, the best looking GP ever. GM built about 275,000 of them. You never see them.

    The 301 had to be the weakest, motor Pontiac ever made ;its no wonder later Pontiacs ended up with the 305 or the Olds 307 – neither of those was going to be a powerhouse , but far more reliable !

    Slugs but nice
    Remove engine and trans combo
    Rebuid rebore and stroke
    Remove all smog and exhaust
    Install efi
    Install ram air manifolds
    Replace trans with aod
    And
    Enjoy this thing

    My high school guidance counselor, a little old lady named Mrs. Weller, had a black 1977 Grand Prix, buckets, auto on floor, color matched rally wheels & tee tops. I, as a student in the mid 1980’s, often wondered how this little old granny looking lady ended up with this cool looking Grand Prix! I wished (and still wish) I owned it.

    Bought mine online from a Chevy dealer in Bothell. It looked exactly the same as the photo, white with the firethorn interior, the 301 and 34k mls. Shipped it to Australia. It’s been my daily driver here for 8 yrs and is a pleasure to drive. Nothing better than taking it on long drive holidays. I love it.
