No Reserve Pony: 1985 Ford Mustang GT

While T-Tops were all the rage in the 1980s, the Ford Mustang isn’t the first vehicle that most folks think of when discussing the unique design feature. However, Ford did indeed create a T-Top variant of the “Fox Body,” with this 1985 Ford Mustang GT that’s available here on eBay serving as a clean and all-original example.

This Mustang is available in Jupiter, Florida with a clean title. The seller notes that they purchased the vehicle from the original owner and added less than 1,000 miles to it during their ownership.

Though it’s a quality specimen, the seller acknowledges there are a handful of flaws with this Mustang. The hood decal shows its age, there are minor scrapes, dings, and chips in the paint, as well as some corrosion in the battery tray. On a positive note, it does benefit from new weatherstripping, and it also has leak-free T-Tops.

The interior of this Pony is impressive. There are some cracks in the dashboard material, but it looks beautiful overall and also features new carpeting. Unfortunately, the air conditioning system does need troubleshooting, but this shouldn’t stop prospective buyers from enjoying this muscle car.

Under the hood, you’ll find a 5.0-liter V8 engine, which pairs to a 5-speed manual transmission to drive the rear wheels. The drivetrain has 77,276 miles on it, and the seller notes that “the car runs and drives extremely well, the suspension is tight, brakes are good, and it needs nothing to be enjoyed.”

This auction has no reserve, and at the time of publication, bidding for this Mustang is at $6,243. Would you add this rare Fox Body variant to your collection?

I bought an 85 gt mustang new and it was a great car. It was the first car I ever owned that didn’t rattle and got decent gas mileage.

T-tops were offered on the 1981 through 1988 models. A buddy of mine had an ’82 GT with them. For some reason, Ford stopped selling Mustangs with them from 1989 on.

Personally not a fan of t-tops. But this is a pretty nice example. It’s in the sweet spot of low mileage but not so low that it has storage issues or you’re afraid to drive it out of fear you’ll reduce the value.

Nice ride, the last of the 4 barrel 5.0’s. Cool looking big dual snorkel air cleaner, when I first saw the all new injected ’86’s on display…yuck!! Couldn’t associate with that odd looking top end at all, not at first anyways.

Not sure if the ’86 mustang intake is plastic, but i can imagine your reaction to TODAY’S ugly cheap lookin plastic motor covers with up to 8 ugly coils underneath, etc. Why bother to open the hood at a car show of one of those?
I wonder what would have been the reaction to the ’74 mustang II fastback if it had the ’85’s DRIVETRAIN & no converter! & bigger wheels & wheelwells/arches. I wonder if someone’s done the transplant – rear end included.

It’s not. It’s a huge aluminum job that sat proudly on the top from ‘86-‘95 in some shape form or fashion. After that, they started covering them up with plastic except for the Cobras. What a beaut that was!

The plastic covers nowadays hide all that wonderful high tech, necessary really. A dust cover?
The reaction to the Mustang II having this particular engine and more wheel and tire would have been favorable amongst car folks and all that but the popularity of that model had little to do with all out performance, at least at first.
I owned an ’86 GT, bought used in late 1990, by then that injected engine was the norm as the 5.0 movement was really full on, but at first that set up seemed strange, I noticed other dudes just staring at it…a bit puzzled.

Today, it is impossible to criticize the look of the iconic 1986-93 Ford 5.0 EFI plenum if you’re a car guy. Sacrilege!!

Superdessucke, today that fuelie 5.0 is actually classic, especially compared to some of the “hidden under plastic” wonders of now. In late 1985 when they first appeared a lot of “car guys” had no idea what they were looking at or how to improve upon it. We learned, especially when the 225 horse came out in ’87. We were still living in Holley’s, high rise intakes, open air cleaners, and headers to put it mildly…..

If you compare this car to restoring a rusted out early mustang this could be a bargain.

Great ad and pictures. ’85 and ’86 are the years I like best too, same as the seller. This is the one I would get if I was looking right now.
