No Reserve Project: 1973 Pontiac Firebird

It seems like most of the F-body Pontiacs in the early 1970s lived in the shadow of the mighty Super Duty Trans Am and the ultra-rare Super Duty Formula. While the Super Duty cars are highly desirable for many reasons, there is still something special about the Formula 350 Firebirds as well. This one, found here on eBay with no reserve, has that unique look that grabs your attention.

The seller of this Firebird is forthright with what resides underneath the hood. The original 350 was apparently removed and a 1976 400 now sits between the fenders. Unfortunately, the original engine is nowhere to be found. The seller states that the car does run but that a finicky electric fuel pump does stand in the way of the car running really well. The purchaser will obviously determine the direction of the project but it’d be great to see this car go back to a 350, as it would have had from the factory.

The driver seat has obviously seen better days, but the seller does say that the only missing interior part is the sail panel, indicating that there is enough of the interior to make some good of it. Because the previous owner had intentions to change the interior color, a new black carpet will come with the project.  One of the more intriguing aspects of this picture is the sight of a manual shifter. The seller indicates that it’s an original four-speed car but that the transmission hasn’t been verified as original. The shifter is claimed to be the original Hurst equipment, adding to the cool factor.

Looking at that front end is almost like looking at a puppy at a pet store that is begging you with its puppy eyes to take it home. Even with that friendly look, most enthusiasts would instantly recognize that unique Formula hood as this Firebird is coming down the road. The original Valencia Gold has been removed or is hidden in favor of a red, whether it’s a paint or a primer. The seller states that the car is solid but inevitably more rust will likely be found. After needed repairs, a return to the original gold would be nice to see. There’s no question that this car is a project but with a current bid under $4,500 and no reserve, is it a worthy one?

I’ll prefer the Volvo in the Background ;)

Would be a nice find, except the Volvo in the background is far more interesting.

Always loved these hoods. The UAW strike on GM in 72-73 meant that there were fewer ’73s than any of the early (70-74) 2nd gen model years. The grills are interchangeable so it’s easy to swap out what geometric pattern you like but this wide egg crate style is also my favorite.

Gold with a saddle colored interior. What were we thinking way back then? Sharpest looking Formula I ever saw was a ’76 with a Polaris Blue exterior, parchment seats and a black carpet. I still like the darker carpet and lighter colored seats whenever I spec out a car.

Surprised the dash & front endura bumper are in such good shape.
Electric fuel pump & aftermkt carb not nec, if you can find a competent carb shop to rebuild the quadrajet.
Be careful not to drop anything on top between the endura bumper & radiator support on ’73’s. Good luck fishing the item out lol
