No Reserve Series 1: 1966 Jaguar E-Type

This 1966 Jaguar E-Type is a desirable Series 1 coupe listed with no reserve and in road-ready condition. The Jaguar benefits from significant work carried out over the years, largely in the hands of the second owner, including new floors and a repaint in the current primrose yellow colors. The E-type features a 4.2L inline-six paired to a four-speed manual transmission and has been further enhanced with a stainless steel exhaust and heat-treated manifolds. Bidding is active at the moment, but the current price still seems low considering the limited amount of time left in the auction. You’ll find the E-Type here on eBay with bidding at $36K and the car located near New York City.

The seller notes that the previous owner undertook much of the cosmetic refresh work, including the paint, carpeting, and door panels. The bodywork looks quite nice, with no mention of the car being a rustbucket prior to the respray. Although the floors were redone, this is not an uncommon repair on most E-Types, even on ones that present quite well from up above. While it’s not necessarily been completely restored, it seems pretty close to it – at the very least, the next owner is going to purchase a car that has little in the way of needs assuming the paint and bodywork were carried out to a decent quality.

The way the listing reads makes it seem as if the interior color scheme was changed at some point. Noting it was “…re-done with black upholstery,” the seller doesn’t specify whether the Jaguar left the factory wearing a biscuit or saddle-colored interior, which seems like a likely combo if the exterior color is original. The Series 1 cars are loved for many reasons, including the ornate dashboard switchgear and covered headlights, both of which remain in place on this car. The steering wheel doesn’t look original to me, but at least it’s a smaller, three-spoke job, which likely makes turning the E-Type more enjoyable even if not technically correct.

The engine features three rebuilt SU carbs, new hoses, a rebuilt radiator, stainless brake lines, and much more, according to the seller. All looks quite clean under-hood and the seller notes that receipts and other paperwork will come with the E-Type verifying the work performed. The E-Type will also be sold with its official Jaguar heritage certificate. Although the bulk of the improvements were carried out in the 80s, the E-Type still presents well, and I’m surprised to not see bidding at a higher number given the desirability of Series 1 cars. Is there a potential bargain in the making given the no reserve listing?

This seems like a deal so far, these are, in my opinion, the best looking cars ever made.

The car was sold on BAT in 2017. It’s not unreasonable that the buyer has put it up for sale three years later. Or am I missing something?

    Greetings All,

Could the author explain why a smaller diameter steering wheel would make “turning more enjoyable”?!? If anything, since these were nor equipped power steering, the smaller diameter means less leverage and harder turning?

It does make getting into the car easier though.

Lots of car ads here are scams, if falsifying miles driven is considered a scam. Including, by the way, this vehicle. Take a look at the first number in the odometer. It doesn’t line up with the others. It’s been cranked back.

The 2017 eBay listing notes this car was bought by stevew277 on 9-28-17, for $61,000.

Nine months later, stevew277 posts in to warn potential/new buyers (see below)

Scam. I bought it last Sept and it is now in the UK. Reported to eBay but no action taken !

It sure *seems* that the current listing might be a scam, especially since it’s still using the 2017 photos. Or would a genuine scammer borrow a digital camera and take some new/different shots???
