Not An El Camino: 1977 GMC Sprint

e5

It’s not an El Camino! This 1977 GMC Sprint (ok, it’s an El Camino with different badging) has been donated to a charity and is being sold here on eBay at no reserve, with bidding under $1,000 at this point. It’s being stored in Stateline, Nevada.

e4

By 1977, the El Camino and Sprint were due to be downsized (they were for 1978), and the styling, although updated with stacked rectangular headlights, wasn’t keeping up with the sharper, straight edges that GM had adopted. This particular example seems to have weathered the years fairly well, although the seller states throughout the ad that they have no history for the vehicle other than that it has been recently driven on a long drive in California.

I’ve seen these a lot rustier than this, and even with some rough parts in spots I think this body is still very sound. There are some rally wheels on the car-truck, but not a set of four.

e6

This truck happens to have the same coloring as one of the factory ads in 1977, which the seller kindly included in the listing.

e2

The bed appears very solid, although the strange deformation in the center seems a little unusual. I’m not sure what happened there! This certainly appears to be the original paint, and while it’s probably not good enough to preserve, at least it’s some indication that there’s nothing horrible going on underneath the surface.

e3

The interior is a mixed bag. The steering wheel looks like either something is growing on it or it was owned by a mechanic that never washed their hands before getting in. The blues have faded differently and the dash is cracked. We know the power steering doesn’t work and the vehicle is described as being very difficult to steer, so if you pick this one up plan on towing it home. We don’t know anything about the engine apart from that it’s a 350 V-8 with a factory four barrel carburetor, but no pictures were included. I think I’d want to look this one over in person before bidding too high, but if it stays low it might be a good buy. Would you rather have the GMC version to be different, or a similar El Camino?

Very nice, somebody is going to get a good deal on this one. I prefer this body style over the ’78 and later. I’m a Ranchero guy, but I’d like to have a nice El Camino.

I just found this site a couple of weeks ago and really enjoy checking out the old cars.
I grew up in the 70s on a car lot, my dad had a car lot in NW AR and we went to auctions weekly so I fondly remember a lot of these cars.
In 1979 my dad bought a 77 El Camino with the intention of keeping it for himself.
He picked it up on a Fri evening and about noon on Sat we were rear ended by a car that was going about 65 they figured.
We got pushed into the car in front of us and when it was all done there was not straight panel on that or a piece of glass not broke.
Everything was so nice about that car for the few hours we had it.
There was 4 of us in the car and we all walked away, I was leaning against the spare tire behind the seat 11 or 12 years old.

Sorry it worked out that way Dave, but I’m glad you were all OK. Welcome to Barn Finds!

Nice.. It will make a great driver while puffing it up.. Doesn’t appear to need much..
    I like it.

I would say with the oddity in the bed and the dirty steering wheel this was most likely a parts chaser car/truck hauler. It would be a decent driver for someone.

1975 and earlier are smog exempt in California!

Nice. Looks like a good buy. I’ve always liked the 77 year body style.
