Not Your Brother’s Jeep: 1959 FC170 4×4

Vintage Jeeps have always been popular with automotive enthusiasts.  Most of the time they are of the CJ or Civilian Jeep variety.  However, in the past few years oddball models have become more accepted.  When I first saw this ad, I immediately thought of the antifreeze green version that I saw at the 2016 SEMA show.  More about that one later.  This particular Jeep truck is a 1958 FC-170 and can be found here on eBay with a current bid of $2,500.  The truck resides in Austin, Texas and has a buy it now price of $9,500.

The ad doesn’t have a lot of information regarding the history or condition of the truck.  It does indicate that the entire drivetrain may need replacing and the transfer case is missing.  Perhaps a body swap to modern diesel truck chassis is in store?  How would you approach this project if it was yours?

How cool is this badge?  I don’t remember seeing one of these before.  The design and layout is great.  It has influences of the jet-age of the 1950’s and 60’s and is a really great design.  I hope the new owner keeps these badges and incorporates them into the truck somewhere.

The interior has certainly seen better days.  You can tell this truck hasn’t been picked apart or modified, which is a good thing if the new owner is going to attempt an original restoration.  For someone going the custom route, these trucks have nearly endless possibilities only limited by your imagination.  How bout antifreeze green with lots of chrome and a marriage of vintage and modern components?  Just check out this 1958 FC170 that was at the 2016 SEMA show.  Can you picture yourself cruising in something that cool?

I always though these forward-control Jeeps were pretty cool.

They were never plentiful, but this one is worthy of saving – just don’t expect to make any money on it.

Um, I don’t get the banner headline, my brother never owned a Jeep. Such an odd vehicle, but it’s claim was a tight turning circle, which made them ideal for plow trucks, which is why you NEVER find these today, especially like this and this is exceptional for a FC. Otherwise, not a big seller. They really were miserable to drive any distance.

And off road, sitting directly over the front axle, these are real kidney pounders.

If I had the time and extra $$$ I would do the antifreeze green truck route but in a different color such as orange with a white top and grille. I don’t mind the forward control since I’ve owned a 63 econoline van & pickup.

Climb in and out of a cab over pickup how many times a day? Not this cowboy. At least one or two of these in the neighbor hood back in the day. Ya they look cool now, as does almost any thing out side of the norm.Restore and put it in the toy box.

Ha! I hear ya’. I made it a point to never step on the steer tire to get in a truck. :)

Good luck with that $9,500.00 price tag. I get daily ebay updates for Willys cars and trucks. For that money you can get a decent driver. No transfer case present, shot motor, he should be doing his happy dance with the current bid. $2,602.00.

Even better bid now, and without a title, it’s just another PIA. I like these trucks, but I’m not buying a vehicle without a title these days. If the bonded title route is so easy, then why don’t the sellers do it and offer it with a title!? I regularly avoid cars I might otherwise consider because of this problem.

Rude, crude, and ugly. And way overpriced. The standard Willys pickups are much more desirable.
