Not Quite A Nomad: 1957 Chevrolet 210 Wagon

210

Well, it’s not a Nomad. But, if you like Nomads, I’d argue it’s the next best thing! This 1957 Chevrolet 210 2-door wagon has most of the looks of the Nomad without at least some of the expense. It’s located in Somers Point, New Jersey and is up for sale here on eBay. Bidding has been aggressive so far but has not yet met reserve. While the car looks superficially very solid, detailed pictures by the seller (who is acting for a friend) show lots of areas that are rusty and need attention. I really appreciate the seller’s statement about posting the pictures that they’d like to see if they were purchasing a car from a distance. The car is equipped with what is probably its original Blue Flame inline-six and an automatic transmission, and while it runs, the seller suggests winching it onto a trailer rather than driving it due to transmission leakage. The seller seems willing to answer questions but rightfully asks that one review the pictures first. I’m guessing they are a no-nonsense kind of person but I suspect they would be helpful if you have legitimate questions. My question to you is this: would you like to add this non-Nomad to your collection? And if so, would you restore it, customize it or run it “as-is” after making it safe?

If I could do my own body work and paint and the reserve was not outrageous I would love to have this car. I would keep body and interior stock but pull the motor & trans to store away then drop a 350 v8 and a AOD in it so I could drive it anywhere, how cool that would be zipping along at 70 mph passing new cars on the interstates. We do that with our 70 Mach1 and do we get the looks from truckers and kids in their parents SUV’s.

IMHO, You would have to be doing more than 70mph if you want to pass any of the new cars on the interstates. Just sayin. Other than that, I agree with what you would do to it. I think I would add a power disc brake set up. We did one on my sons 57 and the difference is night&day. Much safer to drive.

One of the sponsors over at TriFive.com makes frames that accept C4 Corvette front and rear suspensions, another guy offers a kit of flat metal frame pieces that are easy to assemble and weld into a frame, use the donor car’s engine and tranny for a reliable highway cruiser. I’ve heard the car corners like a Vette. If you have a 55-57 Chevy you probably know about TriFive.com.

How rude, I forgot to answer Jamie’s question, I’ve decided my next TriFive is going to be a 55, so I wouldn’t add it to my junk yard of future projects, or Chuck’s Old Car Nursing Home, last stop before the bone yard. It does look like it would make a good stock cruiser, as a minimum make it safe with a dual master cylinder, not that hard to install. I guess that makes my vote for running it as-is, maybe do a decent looking quickie paint job.

Okay….I see the rust – all in all not a bad price at $3500 which it is close to at the moment. My Texas lived 1957 – 150 – 2 door wagon was just a roller with no motor and it brought $2000 with floors and some window work needed….still had the original paint which – I think was a selling point….

“Not quite”a Nomad is putting it mildly. In many ways this is the antithesis of a Nomad. Amazing that it is bidding over three grand. Must be the new hundred bucks. A friend had one in college in the very early seventies, I used to…… ummm…. “borrow” it by hot wiring it……….and leaving it wherever I turned up after a night of .um……religious services.
