Numbers-Matching Muscle: 1967 Pontiac GTO

This 1967 Pontiac GTO might not be perfect, but it is a car where you can slide behind the wheel, hit the open road, and enjoy the type of sweet music that only a 400ci V8 can produce. If that sounds as sweet to you as it does to me, then you will find the GTO located in Arlington, Texas, and listed for sale here on eBay. The owner has set a BIN of $36,500 for the Pontiac, although you could always try your luck by making him an offer.

Apart from the nose and rear valance, the GTO is said to wear all of its original Tyrol Blue Metallic paint. This looks to be in nice condition for its age, with only a few minor chips and marks that you would expect from a car that has been treated with a reasonable level of care and respect. Rust issues are virtually non-existent. There is one small area in the driver’s side front fender that you can see in this photo, and the owner says that the rest of the car is solid and clean. This is good news because I’m sure that we’ve all seen plenty of GTOs of this vintage that have developed some serious cases of tin-worm. The original rear bumper has been treated to a trip to the plater, while the rest of the exterior trim looks to be in extremely nice condition. There is one choice that the next owner is going to have to make before they drive away in this beauty. The wheels that you see fitted to the car are a set of Kelsey Hayes magnesium wheels, which were manufactured between 1968 and 1972. The buyer can choose to retain these, or there is an extremely clean set of Rally II wheels that could be fitted instead. Personally, I quite like the Rally II wheels, but these existing wheels are still a tempting proposition.

Apart from the tachometer attached to the steering column, and the fresh carpet set, the Black interior trim of the GTO is said to all be original. If this is true, then it has held up extremely well over the past 52-years. I don’t see any obvious rips or tear in the upholstery, while the dash and pad look close to flawless. Even the optional console appears to be in good condition, while the Deluxe wheel is wearing a wrap which, hopefully, will protect the rim from wear. The inclusion of the aftermarket tach would suggest that the factory unit no longer functions. That is something that I would be inclined to address in a bid to retain as much interior originality as possible.

Unfortunately, the owner provides us with no engine photos. However, what we do know is that this is a full, numbers-matching car. What you get is the “HO” version of the 400ci V8, which pumps out a very healthy 360hp. This power is fed through a 4-speed manual transmission to a Safe-T-Track rear end. This potent combination is capable of propelling the GTO from 0-60mph in 5.5 seconds, while the ¼ mile can be demolished in 14.2 seconds. The previous owner had the engine rebuilt in the late 1970s, and after sitting idle from some point in the 1980s, the current owner revived the car approximately 5-years-ago. Since then he has driven the car on a fairly regular basis, and it has always been properly serviced and maintained. He recently took it on a 300-mile road-trip, and the car performed faultlessly. Even during the hottest weather that Texas could throw at it, the GTO showed no signs of wanting to run hot.

For the person who is on the hunt for a potent classic that is ready to be driven and enjoyed, this 1967 Pontiac GTO could be a great car to consider. Its high level of originality is one of its strongest selling points, but its general lack of rust issues would run a close second. The next owner could choose to either undertake a light cosmetic restoration, leave it exactly as it currently stands, or address that one minor rust spot and then drive the car as an original survivor. That last option would sound pretty tempting to me. How about you?

Wow! And it’s drivable! This is far more reasonable than most on eBay (or elsewhere it seems), and in need of very little initial TLC.

Hey, Nev, about 10 years ago, a friend attended a farm auction, and an “add on” was a ’67 GTO, very similar to this. Being a farm auction in S. Wis., nobody was bidding on it, just the wrong crowd. He wasn’t looking for a GTO, but couldn’t resist. He never told me what he paid for it, but must have been a steal. Right place at the right time, I guess.

Another case of “Timing is everything”, or “I’d rather be lucky than good”…
And I’ll bet your friend still has his prize!

Fix that rusty fender and drive the heck out of it. Great looking car with a lot of potential IMO.

Those are some rare wheels! Can’t remember the last time I’ve seen then for sale on a car or by themselves. Favorite color too.
