Off-Road Runner: 1956 Jeep CJ5

This is essentially exactly how you’d picture a Jeep being used: paint burnt off, oversized tires on steel wheels, the most basic top possible, and doing duty on a rural property high into the California mountains. This example is listed by the owner of a piece of property where the Jeep has done duty both as an off-road rig and in-town vehicle when needed, but the property is now for sale which means the CJ is, too. Find it here on eBay with a $3,500 Buy-It-Now and the option to submit a best offer.

Rust is said to be negligible, with two spots of it below the side door and seemingly no where else. The accompanying video in the listing shows it blistering on the passenger side, down near where the fender meets the lower part of the door frame, and while not insignificant, you could live with it for the time being. The rest of the Jeep just has surface rust in spots.

The interior is spartan, but that’s as it should be. The cabin shows two black bucket seats and matching green paint, but it almost looks too green – like the early 90s repaint went a little bit too far. Regardless, it’s not important considering how this Jeep has been used, which clearly involved leaving it parked at the remote second property for extended periods of time.

The seller claims the engine is original and happy on road and off, and that the 3-speed manual rows through the gears nicely. The transmission also still engages 4WD in both high and low, and the brakes and suspension are said to be issue-free. The Jeep comes with a clean California title, and will hopefully keep doing its thing as a weekend rock hopper for the next owner.

My kind of Jeep. One of the best years with a decent price.

Very decent price-so much so it’s already gone @ the BIN price!
But there’s another CA 1959 for sale on eBay-$3500 and no engine under the hood..
Obviously the one featured here was a great deal to someone.

Looks like Spruce Tip Green, an amazing 60’s Jeep color. Wow that was a good deal.

In agree, a great deal,,,yet, coming from Jeepland, it’s about right. It’s not the most desirable CJ with the 4 cylinder. Don’t get me wrong, I’d like to have it too, but for mending fences in the back 40, or bouncing through the woods pulling a fishing boat, certainly nothing to spend any time on the road with. Wasn’t designed for that. Everybody is spoiled with new Jeeps, I think the appeal for these is fading.
