One Family Owned: 1968 Dodge Charger R/T

This 1968 Dodge Charger has belonged to the same family since new, and while it will need a bit of work to return it to its best, it looks like a solid car that could be driven and enjoyed as it currently stands. Located in Denver, Colorado, it is listed for sale here on eBay. Bidding for the Charger currently sits at $27,400, but the reserve hasn’t been met.

The Charger is a clean looking car. it underwent a repaint in its original factory Yellow at some point in its life, and this has stood the test of time quite well. The black vinyl top also appears to be in good condition. I’m not sold on the aftermarket wheels, but that might just be personal taste. The seller provides a good selection of clear photos, and they show a car that appears to be rust-free. One big plus is that all of the external trim and chrome, including that all-important grille with the hidden headlights, looks to be in first-class condition.

The interior is where the Charger falls down, but at least it does appear to be complete. The aftermarket seat covers prevent us from seeing the condition of the seats, but the shopping list will include new carpet, a new headliner, new dash pad, and a number of smaller trim items. Important pieces like the Rally pack gauges and the Tic-Toc-Tach are all present, and in good condition, while the floor console looks like it might be in need of some restoration work.

One of the great pieces of news about the Charger is that it is a full numbers-matching car. The original 375hp, 440ci Magnum V8, the 3-speed TorqueFlite transmission, and orignal rear end are all present, while you also get power steering and power brakes. The car has also been fitted with air shocks in the back, which was a pretty common addition in the 1970s and 1980s. The car is said to run and drive, so it looks like it will only need some minor maintenance and some detailing before it is ready to hit the road again.

If I was buying this Charger, I’d probably bring the interior up to scratch, replace the aftermarket wheels, give the mechanicals a decent check-up, and then drive it as it stands. The repaint means that the car isn’t completely original, but its current condition means that it is a car that could be enjoyed with very little work. If you bought it, what would you do?

Those cheap aftermarket wheels replaced so many factory wheels back in the late 70s – early 80s it made me cringe when I saw them – guess it still does

Prob came with wheel covers, but the call of JC Whitney was too great. Wonder if they still have the original wheels/covers to go with the sale?

I guess this isn’t the time or place to make my , “switch to a slant six engine” comment , huh? I guess, this has so much monetary value, that would make no sense at all. I do remember slant six Chargers back then from the factory, of course, they were not RTs. What is the one family thing all about and why are they selling it now? Are they getting out while the getting is good or need the cash?

I’d let people know that it was repainted in its original shade of yellow.

Correct me if I am wrong, is the spare in the trunk a studded snow tire?

Did Earl (Slob) Scheib shoot the extra paint all over the rubber seals and apply plenty of overspray at no additional charge?

Such a deal, any car any color $19.95

You’d be hard pressed to find a nicer undercarriage on an unrestored ’68 Charger anywhere.
That being said, did anyone else see a problem with those matching numbers?

Matching #s on core support & trunk rail differ from VIN # on dash plate ? Is this the norm ?

Yes – norm for a 1968 – the rare is a 1968 that does match all #’s. 1969 was the year most all matched up.

Build sheets don’t always match – they could have threw in the car before or after.

I think they have it listed ,or did, at $49k. Totally delusional seller. As mentioned the aftermarket cheapo wheels and the horrible interior are just a glimpse into this cars issues. The $28,500 bid is really all the money on this car and it still not at the reserve, assuming it’s rust free and or very clean. The seller really dropped the ball on the sales prep IMO. Car could look alot better for the money they’re asking.

By the late 70s, half of that amount would have been laughable, I miss those days, I really do.

Any one else notice the price of these is dropping like a rock lately? Reason? People like me who owned one are getting to darn old. They should be selling because it is a soft market and likely won’t get better. We are all gonna die!

I will never figure people out!! You have a nice car like this for sale and obviously want the most money out of the auction. Spend a day or two detailing the interior, engine compartment and trunk! Get that snow tire out of the picture and invest in a nice set of red-lines and the proper wheels. Some new trunk weather seals won’t break the bank either. Lazy lazy people!!!

Used to love these and early Broncos. Used to is key. They’ve gotten so ridiculous with ‘values’ that it’s become a turn off. I’m not saying people should just give them away for next to nothing but prices are just out of control.

My uncle had one of these blue body with black interior and black vinyl roof. 440 and 4speed trans. I wanna say it had dual quads on it too as I remember one day my aunt came in to her moms place all smiles and saying she had the speedometer wrapped all the way around almost to zero! Fast car. Around 1982 some random guy offered uncle Dan enough cash that he drove off in it. Two weeks go by and police are at his step questioning his whereabouts when someone used the car still registered in his name as the get away vehicle after an armed robbery at a bank in CA. The perp(s) got away and abandoned the Charger.
