One of 507: 1990 BMW Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo

When it comes to BMW’s 5 Series sedans, the third-generation E34 chassis doesn’t usually get the recognition it deserves. However, it’s hard for anyone to look past a BMW model modified by the tuning powerhouse known as Alpina. This 1990 Alpina B10 Bi-Turbo is available here on eBay, and while it was well taken care of, it has also been enjoyed during its lifetime.

This sedan is available in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, where it is available with a clean title. This example was originally sold in Germany and later sent to Japan. In 2006, someone imported the vehicle to Canada, where it currently resides.

In 2007, the car received a complete exterior paint respray to correct minor imperfections. To this day, the exterior of the vehicle remains free of rust and dents, though there are some minor rock chips on the front bumper and spoiler.

The interior is in remarkable shape, showing off the green and blue colors that are symbolic for Alpina vehicles. It’s hard not to love those classy front sport seats, especially with the aggressive bolsters. The seller notes that the headliner was replaced in 2006, and the only area of concern is some wear on the rear parcel shelf. Otherwise, all electrical accessories work, as does the climate control system.

Under the hood, you’ll find an extensively modified version of BMW’s M30 inline 6-cylinder engine, which mates to a 5-speed Getrag manual transmission to drive the rear wheels. Alpina fitted the engine with two turbochargers, resulting in a 0-60 mph time of 5.1 seconds, and a top speed of 181 mph. Somewhat surprisingly, this well-kept example has 164,300 kilometers on it, which translates to about 102,000 miles.

The Buy it Now price for this unique E34 is $62,900, though the seller will consider reasonable offers. Personally, I love the fact that a car of this pedigree has over 100,000 miles on its odometer, yet remains a very clean and cared for specimen. Could you see yourself owning this Alpina E34, or is it just too expensive?

Nice car! Reminds me of a M 5 a friends dad had. Highly modified, it would run over 180 mph.
I was in it at 175 before. Very serious performance cars especially back in the late 80s early 90s.

I love these and nearly bought one a few times when they were more affordable.
Test drive some E30 and E36 Alpinas too but never pulled the trigger.
    This one looks nice ..

Just curious … who would service an Alpina? Can that be done at a BMW dealer? An Indy? Are repair manuals with specs readily available?

They are sold and serviced by BMW dealers in the U.K.

A good independent BMW shop could take care of it,
Alpina were basically a factory hot rod.

It seems strange to me that the 1990 Bently Turbo R that was here a couple of days ago sold for only $12,211 and the BIN on this Bimmer is $62,900. And the Bently stickered for almost $200K! Any thoughts on the price spread?

Bentley’s do not really have an enthusiast collector car following. BMWs have one of the largest enthusiast collector car followings. Bentley’s are insanely expensive to maintain. BMWs can be expensive to maintain, but are generally not insanely expensive as long as you are smart about which car and where you get it serviced.
To be fair, I can show you some $130k+ BMWs that can be had for $15k…..They are called 7 series. And some Bentley’s like COntinentals, hold their value better than others.

Thanks Skippy, I bought my first Bimmer last year, a 2000 Z3. Love that car and am looking for another. I am not going to spend the cabbage for this, but I have seen some nice 5 and 6 rigs around. Most are to far away. I did bid on the 633 that was here on auction. Thank you for the heads up on the 7 series. I will expand my search to thoughs as well. I really knew nothing of the BMW rigs untill the Z3. Learning alot from the forums. Not many in rural Wisconsin! Take care, Mike.

It’s hard for me as I love Bentley Turbo Rs. Fond memories of driving round in the back of one as a kid so I also struggle.

Always liked what BMW was doing with sedans in the late 80s / early 90s.
Someone will wave 30k cash at the seller…and this beauty will have a new home.
