The MGA was MG’s replacement for the MG TF, a high-riding, classically styled car with separated fenders and big wire wheels. The MGA was a departure from the past and featured a long, low body with enclosed fenders and a streamlined design. This 1960 model boasts one owner from new, and as a result only 4,593 original miles! You can find it here on eBay at no reserve.
The seller says that it was bought by the original owner, and based on the license plates was last registered in 1967, then stored in a barn since then. The plus side of that is that this car is exceptionally original, never having been in an accident, and still with the original factory fit and finish on the body and other bits. It still wears its original black paint over red upholstery, though the paint will need some work. But the interior is spectacular, albeit with some missing seat bottoms. It has all of its original switchgear, gauges, and glass, all of which is in almost like-new condition, save a thick layer of barn dust and some rust spots on the trim.
There are no images of the frame, but the seller shows a picture of some rust in the trunk. They say it’s because of some mice who decided that the best place to make a home was in the spare tire well of an old MG. That’s not all, though. If you get this car, the rocker panel on the passenger side is basically rotted away, so that will need to be addressed. The only experience I have with rusted rocker panels was on a unibody Oldsmobile, and that basically bricked the car. Since this is body-on-frame, I’m sure you could get away with no rocker panel if the frame is good.
Based on the engine number they give: 16GA-u-21569, and the badge on the boot, this is a 1600 model. It’s got the 1,588cc inline four-cylinder making 79.5 horsepower when new, driving the rear wheels through a four-speed manual. All original, numbers matching, et cetera. It doesn’t run, but the seller says the engine does turn with the crank, so at least it isn’t seized. This would be a great project; with a little metalwork and a basic rebuild, you could be well on your way to having a brand new 1960 MGA 1600.
Needs a lot of work but sure would be fun. Black with red interior is my bullseye MG combo. They are rare to find outside of Hemmings.
The car and “a little metal work” just don’t seem to go together. That and things like a broken steering wheel rim etc. indicate that nothing is going to be easy to repair on this car. Mileage statement with so many dings and so much rust is also a bell ringer of the highest order. These are neat cars and lots of fun but this one is going to take all the gas money you have to fix it.

The seller seems to think that people are stupid. Anybody who believes the mileage claim is also convinced there´s a Santa Claus. This abused example of a once fine car is a sad testimony of people´s disdain for things mechanical. Shame on the person who beat this car to death and then has the nerve to offer it up for sale.
not so much abused when alive but sure was stored badly, that rust you see inside the rocker is the side of the frame, the frame will also have rust where the steel angle is spot welded on to mount the wooden floors, maybe the left steel door frame is not too good either, but still far better than you can find in the UK, I am looking at this as potential project for myself,
And the mileage really doesn’t matter because absolutely everything, and I mean everything, has to be rebuilt.
But it’s certainly worth doing.

Now we know they had snow in 1967! it has a lot of rust and those “new” floor boards are making it look a lot better than it really is, just depends on how bad the frame rust is…….
