One-Owner: 1969 Pontiac Convertible GTO

At first glance, this 1969 Pontiac GTO looks a little rough and crusty but it is actually a pretty rare convertible GTO that was bought by the seller’s father upon his return from Vietnam. The car is listed for sale here on eBay with 17 days remaining in the listing. The seller has a Buy It Now Price of $28,500. The Goat is located in Fulton, Illinois. The odometer reading on the car is 78,255 miles.

The exterior is painted in antique gold with a green vinyl interior and a white convertible top. You don’t see many convertible GTOs these days. The car is equipped with power steering, power brakes and a power convertible top. The car is said to run great and still sports its original Rally II wheels. The 1969 Pontiac GTO was available with three different engines. The base engine was a 350 horsepower 400 cubic inch V8 engine. Pontiac offered the Ram Air III and Ram Air IV 400 cubic inch V8 engines as options. The Ram Air III engine was rated at 366 horsepower and the Ram Air IV engine was rated at 370 horsepower. Many believe that the Ram Air IV engine was underrated.

The seller and his father kept all the records on the car and many of the original parts since new. This includes the original window sticker from the dealership and even the original factory Delco battery. The car was kept in a garage from 1993 to 2017. The seller removed the car from the garage in 2017 and got it running so he could enter it in the Pontiac GTOAA National Car Show where it received a concours bronze award.

The 400 cubic inch V8 engine is backed by a GM automatic transmission. There is some surface rust on the car and it would be worth taking a look at the undercarriage to see if there is any rot under the car. If you like “242” cars, this might be a great car to keep original or restore.

This could be a fairly easy restoration. The interior to me looks gold, like the body. Once restored, this could be a very sharp car, but be kinda unique. You don’t see many gold goats, let alone a top less one. I’d buy it if I had the cash!

Has seen some heavy use for only 4 years on the road.
I like the gold interior, too.

This looks to be a great restoration project, so long as rust is not hiding beneath the carpeting and in the trunk. I would want to see many more pictures, but if the floors and rockers are solid someone could have fun with this one-family owned GTO.

That “ash gold” color always seemed to fade in such a short time on these late 60s GM cars.

Had a same year Tempest with OHC 250. We used to joke it came with anti glare paint.

Still looked tons better than today’s 4 door appliances with peeling CLEARCOAT due to lack of waxing these days – when was the last time you seen someone doing that in a driveway? The again, why bother when you can’t even see the hood from the driver’s seat on most of todays vehicles.
I’m having trouble finding, of all things, turtle wax liquid or paste wax!
Spray wax will not cut it for a daily driver kept outside where it rains a lot!

Automatic and no Safe-T-Track will hold it back. Too bad it wasn’t equipped well…I guess hindsight is 20/20.

Interestingly the paperwork does indicate a 3.55 gear ratio, but you’re right, no Safe-T-Track.

A post Vietnam tour purchase that wasn’t totaled. That makes it a real survivor.

Amazing survivor! The dad loved that car so much that he kept every stitch of paperwork … and even the factory battery! How cool is that.
Hope this one gets bought & brought back to it’s prior glory.

In 1969 I worked for Boeing at the 747 plant outside Everett, Washington. I made $4.06 per hour. I bought my first house at 3218 N.E. 97th street Seattle, Washington for $13,550.00, my payment on a twenty year loan was $125.00 per month. That same year I bought a new Chevy Nova for $2,700.00 with trade in and $500.00 down payment. My monthly payment on a two year note was $95.00 monthly.
Now all these years later the house sold a few years ago for over 1/4 million dollars while the Nova has increased in value it’s no ways near the inflation of the house.
    God bless America

Beautiful the way it is. Only original once. Maintain and drive. Love the comment about lazy people today who do not maintain their stupid SUVs that cost $59,000 and more. I work at a Jeep dealer. You should see the one year old junk in for service. Bugs already embedded in paint, deep scratches from whatever, filthy interiors choked with cigarettes. List goes on. My 20 year old cars still look new. Wash and wax and don’t be a pig. It’s easy. America is fat and lazy. How come so many detailing products are sold? Nobody uses them.
